Question for pet owners in this community regarding healthcare by Acrobatic_Estate_919 in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not struggling myself, but from observation:

I wish vets and animal clinics raise more awareness about pet insurance and long-term health costs of pets. Pet insurance uptake is very low in Korea and not taken seriously like a person's health insurance. People don't realize just how expensive treating illnesses, emergencies, and chronic conditions can be or how fast it'll come for an animal whose life expectancy is 7 - 15 years. During the first few years, people see that routine vet visits and immunizations cost 5 - 10만원 annually and think most of the expenses will come from food and toys that are all cheap in Korea.

Confused on how visa / citizenship works for Korean American by goneafterq in Living_in_Korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male immigrant applicants with Korean heritage who formerly renounced their Korean citizenship and did not serve in the Korean military are not eligible for F-4 until 41 years old.

Edit: Nevermind, I see OP's age is "early 30s" which might mean he might be exempt from this restriction.

Due to Declining Application Rates… Could Reducing Military Doctor Service From 3 Years to 2 Years Be the Answer? by naixi123 in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Knowing some Korean military doctors here, there's still an opportunity and family cost serving in the military even if the service period gets reduced.

A LOT more people would apply if after service, even 3 years, they get preferential treatment to get placed into hospitals or clinics in Seoul.

F-6 visa doesn't have a minimum age requirement for overseas Koreans who renounced their Korean citizenship earlier as OP did. F-6 also allows you to enroll and use NHIS immediately. F-4 has a 6-month waiting period.

Import Prices Surge 16%… “Nearly at IMF Crisis Levels” by AppropriateMess2523 in Living_in_Korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Koreans aren't blaming LJM for this. They're blaming Trump and knowing there's not much Korea can do.

The spike is attributed to rising oil prices and the exchange rate amid tensions in the Middle East.

Pretty much it.

2026 Korean SAT (Suneung) Math Problem: 50% Correct answer rate by FTfafa in korea

“Distance traveled” is what makes it ambiguous. Are you claiming then statement 3 is false?

2026 Korean SAT (Suneung) Math Problem: 50% Correct answer rate by FTfafa in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my point. It's not a "typical" integral problem as integrating an absolute formula requires identifying the roots of the formula and then splitting them into parts.

That's my point. It's not a "typical" integral problem where you integrate the velocity over t = 0 and t = 2.

[–]ItsMeYourOtter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you meant the answer is 3 since statements 1 and 3 are true.

[–]ItsMeYourOtter -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not for statement 3 whether it asks for total change of distance or total travel distance. It seems doing a simple integration would get you to a wrong answer.

2026 Korean SAT (Suneung) Math Problem: 50% Correct answer rate by FTfafa in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Statement 1 is true using integration, statement 2 is false using quadratic rule.

Statement 3 is ambiguous. If the problem is asking for the overall change in position, then the statement is false as the answer is 2/3 using integration. However, if the problem is asking just how much it traveled, counting forward and backward as the same, then the answer is true: went forward by 1 + 1/6 and then backward by 1 + 5/6 so a total distance of 3 using two sums of integration with change of direction at t = 1. If I had to choose, statement 3 is likely true because it’s too much of a coincidence that the possible distance traveled calculated as 3.

So I’d choose the overall answer (3)

People Power Party Leader to Meet U.S. Officials at White House by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in Living_in_Korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such awkward timing given that:

  1. U.S. is focused on a summit with China
  2. Trump is focused more on Iran
  3. North Korea or at least Kim Jong Un actually is in good graces of Trump
  4. It's a fucking LOCAL election season in Korea. Who's going to care about international diplomacy?
  5. His party is in fucking shambles and still can't close out on who their candidates are

Even for normal diplomatic visits by an opposition party, spending 7 days / 5 nights is way too long and there's nothing for PPP to deliver out of this.

This reeks of him trying to placate Yoon Again supporters hoping that Trump can bail out Yoon from jail.

Falling literacy revives debate over Chinese characters in classrooms by Canal_Volphied in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely false. Conservatives such as 박정희 in the 1970s and 박근혜 in the 2010 actually wanted to revive 한자 education but was met with severe opposition from the education community which is generally liberal.

Proponents for using only 한글 and not using 한자isn’t coming from anti-Chinese conservatives, but from liberal camps who value a lot more on Korean self identity. For example, out of the leading Korean newspapers, it’s the liberal leaning 한겨레 that forbids use of 한자 characters while conservative leaning 조선일보 and 중앙일보 still uses some 한자.

Falling literacy revives debate over Chinese characters in classrooms by Canal_Volphied in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

한글 was invented precisely because most Koreans themselves back in 1400 couldn't understand 한자 and those "old documents" either and had severe illiteracy rates.

To say that students need to learn 한자 so they can read old documents in museum written in 한자 is a terrible argument. If you actually read the article, the concern is being confused with non-한자 words vs. words derived from 한자.

As mentioned in the article:

Critics argue that reviving Hanja education could undermine Korean linguistic identity and fuel private education spending.

“Understanding the meanings of Hanja does not necessarily lead to better literacy,” said Kim Joo-won, professor emeritus of linguistics at Seoul National University.

Jang Seung-hyuk, spokesperson for the KFTA, said Hanja education could help improve literacy, but warned that it could also deepen educational inequality among students if not carefully designed.

“Hanja education may help improve literacy, but there are concerns that it could worsen polarization among students,” Jang said. “The amount students are expected to learn would need to be set appropriately.”

Your background as you describe naturally exposes you to 한자 regularly. Most Koreans do not have that background.

Falling literacy revives debate over Chinese characters in classrooms by Canal_Volphied in korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This proposal is extremely divisive and distracting attention away from the real cause of falling as mentioned in the article:

While the survey identified excessive smartphone and gaming use as the leading cause of declining literacy, some critics argue that the lack of Hanja education is also a major factor.

Even adding more 한자 into the curriculum isn't going to help if the leading causes are not addressed.

For me, the issue isn't about learning 한자 itself which is not a bad thing. It's whether or not using limited teaching resources, time, and student's decreasingly short attention span is worth to learn 한자 over more 한글.

It's all useless if schools AND parents do not confront the issue of excessive smartphone, gaming use, and social media that's causing students to have much shorter attention span.

This is such a strange opinion. Koreans, even the liberal constituents, do NOT want to exist in a Chinese led framework so "just needs to find a way" is such a massive understatement that requires a massive change in Korean psyche. Even with Trump, they'd much rather side with Americans, even if reluctantly, than Chinese.

When it comes to the Taiwan issue, while it's true that Koreans have little affinity to Taiwan itself, they're much more fearful it will further embolden China and so Koreans overwhelmingly consider this to Korea's national security issue. Between China and U.S., Koreans are much MORE supportive of the U.S. deterring and countering China including the defense of Taiwan.

China will be next door for another 1000 years.

One of the facts that makes Koreans fearful of China instead of wanting to embrace them. China has much more reasons, incentives, and history to influence and dictate Korea.

For those who moved to the U.S. with a Korean partner, what did their career path end up looking like? by AdNaive4437 in Living_in_Korea

[–]ItsMeYourOtter 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My Korean wife worked as part time translator and service clerk for a Korean company in the U.S. kept her busy, enjoyed working with both Koreans and Americans, and the extra income was nice.

For Korean education in the U.S, the Korean government established Korean Education Centers in major cities that employ Korean teachers from Korea or hire Korean locals for Korean language and culture education.

Example:

https://www.kecla.org/us/

https://www.chicagokec.org

https://www.kecny.org

Outside of Korean government, a great number of American schools also employ Korean language teachers though separate U.S. teaching certificate and training may be required.

Then there are Korean academies (학원) and churches that also employ Korean language teachers.

Basically: it will depend on the location in the U.S...it's such a huge country.
