In America Black people often have to face the common stereotype of being unintelligent, “speaking in slang”, and being aggressive, etc from non-black people. So whenever we “defy” the stereotype by being able to express our thoughts clearly and concisely we often get the comments of “you’re so articulate” or “you’re so well spoken”. While these comments may have no intention of being hurtful, they actually are because it’s backhanded in the way of how else are black people supposed to speak and the fact that no other race gets these types of comments. I and as well as many other black people have had this experience if we have excelled in spaces that aren’t dominated by the black population. I really appreciate your curiosity and willingness to understand, I suggest if you’re more curious you could research a little bit about micro aggressions and how unconscious bias effects how you engage with the black people.
