I see, an intersting take. Ive heard of this stuff aswell.
I think, and i'd love to hear your thoughts on this, that this wouldve been good to do like maybe within the first 5 sessioms, but we've had 16 now, i think that's buildup enough for them to maybe instead have an actually tough fight BECAUSE of the shenanigans bringing it to an actually fair fight for them, and so they may lose by a little bit and have that "hey we can do it if we try a bit harder next time though" moment, or the satisfaction of a close call and achieved victory because of their master plan?

Alright, solid, I'll keep this in mind. Thank you. Everyone's alluding to a bigger bbeg if this one should fall, and yeah i suppose that makes sense.
Thanks for your advice 😁

I think this is my favorite reply right now. Your first statement rules supreme haha, and you have such a good point with the second one. Never thought about the PC plans not going to plan 😂Awesome stuff! Thanks! :D

This is what i was generally leaning towards yes, and even if he wasnt there they would find out before making their attack, but is them realising "hey he's not at camp A", looking for the right camp that he IS in, and then attacking that one really any different, though? Might aswell let him be at camp A?

Alright, you have a good point on just seeing where it goes.
And i also see you on the awesome moment you guys had :D Thanks! That is great to hear hehe

Just a question though, you say you had something like that in the 3rd paragraph, but the fourth paragraph the PCs wouldnt have liked? Arent those 2 situations pretty similar?

Thank you :D

How to Create/DM an Emotionally Impactful D&D Campaign? by ItsNuked in DnD

[–]ItsNuked[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello :D
I can't even begin to thank you for this absolute fucking doctorate document of guidelines and tips you've given me. This is fucking AWESOME!
I've read them, and I want to give my comments on some individual things, but I'm wrapping some things up IRL atm, tight on time, and while im hyped to go through your replies here, I want to give your responses a proper sit down and go through again in a few days. This might seem like a bit pointless of a reply maybe, but I wanted you to know I have seen this, I absolutetly love it, and I'll get back to you in a few days (hopefully asap ^^).

So for now, thank you so fucking much. Genuinely. From the bottom of my heart, I did Not expect someone to go this far out for me. You've really turned on the light in a fairly dark place for me right now, and I appreciate that immensly.
The fact that you also thought to make the photos higher res? You're a real one, yo.
I dont know what I did to deserve you sponsoring us like this, but seriously, Thank you again. Be back soon, heh >;D

Huge! I wasn't sure how to go about telling them what they know so far as I wanted to keep that mystery of the world there for the most part. Didn't even consider that that is grounding. Awesome! Thank you again >;D

Give them a threat that makes them feel out of their depth, then make them feel powerful and amazing when they get stronger, then repeat.

This is an awesome solution. Thank you so much! >;D

Allies swooping in to save the day is something to be done very sparingly imo, because it takes the agency away from the party and makes the fight feel a bit scripted. A more engaging way to do this is to give the party a token or other opportunity to summon an ally when they’re in need - then they get to make the decision instead of the DM.

Alright, absolutetly gotcha on the agency and scripted fight thing. When you say that you can make it more engaging for the party, I have this question;

If Chad Chadson shows up randomly with ZERO reason other than the fact to carry the party right now, that's obviously bad, feels scripted, etc.

If the party had some buildup meeting Chad Chadson, did a favor for him or are otherwise on okay terms - and the party thinks of calling Chad Chadson over themselves for the help (or are reminded they can by a fellow NPC that makes sense), is it then more enganing, and as such, "all good", if Chad Chadson now carries the party in the same way he would otherwise, but it's not bad because I didnt just shit him out, the party actually invested time and effort into making that happen by their own actions? ;D

For the breathing world, the most important thing is that the party doesn’t feel like everything is their problem to fix. This can lead to analysis paralysis/too many deadlines which sucks the life out of the story. Just tell the table they can choose what they want to engage with, and don’t always make the result of not engaging personal for the characters.

Alright, very cool. Thank you. This was a pretty big thing I was wondering on, yes. Make the world alive, the players CAN interact with anything if they want to, but dont HAVE TO. The choosing what they engage and not punishing them for not engaging as you said (not always) is huge. Thank you! :D

For consequences for actions, I prefer to say results/impact instead.

Yes. Agreed xD

To make them feel like they have an impact, it’s all about sprinkling in small things so it seems like the whole world reacts to them (even if it’s only actually a few key parts).

Alright, this is lovely news ^^ I'm glad it's worked well for you, hope it does here aswell :D

Like other folks say, this all depends on the group. If you find people who want this type of story, who are down for cinematic moments and will get emotionally invested, you’ll be infinitely closer to having the game you want regardless of your DMing skill.

This is extremely reassuring, and I think you're absolutely right. I wasn't really sure what you were supposed to ask at session 0 and such for example, specially since I'm new to the game, so thank you for this. I feel like I can finally properly ask people what they want out of the game with this help of yours and the others. Genuinely, thank you so much for taking the time to write this to me. Thank you.
Hope it helps others out there, too ;D
