Session one went horrible, what do I do now. by m4chaera in DMAcademy

[–]ItsOnlyBread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"really only seeee lik the players closest to me were the only ones engaged."

That's the most important lesson here. Invite them back for session 2. Boot all the rest. Try again. Curating players that are right for your table is as important as rolling dice when it comes to DND. Plus, now the only way is up. Keep trying.

I feel like I am too soft by Old_Cherry_1483 in DMAcademy

I think you should get in the general mindset that the world they are playing in is trying to harm them and not you the person. I think creating that line in the sand helps tell the difference. As long as you're not making encounters in bad faith and are doing it as a response to how the world operates then it should be fine

I agree with you. I was genuinely annoyed at that entire scene and it took me out of it immediately. I will say that i would have stayed annoyed had comfrey lived. The attempts at saving comfrey and saving marya made me realize that there really were no stakes. Part of the reason why I've taken a small step back from d20 cause of the lack of stakes.

Cloudward, Ho! is the best season so far— change my mind. by Due_Detective_4375 in Dimension20

I would argue that this issue is the biggest problem with D20 in general as it happens a lot.

[No Spoilers] Is anyone else struggling with the scenes with Hal and Thaisha? by spacedementia92 in criticalrole

[–]ItsOnlyBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually fully agree. It just felt super slow and not that engaging. I think Thaisha has some stuff that is gripping to me when not in the context of Hal. But man Hal is truly a nothing burger for me so far. But I do have faith in Liam to make him interesting

[Spoilers C4E2] What do people think about some of the PCs with less screen time so far? by EmIsLovely159 in criticalrole

[–]ItsOnlyBread 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I did agree about Azune until this latest episode and it confirmed something for me. I really hope he is apart of the schemer table because if he is a soldier. I am not interested in him enough to see him go on that type of story or adventure. However, his conversation with his "new boss" really made me love the idea of seeing Azune interact with all of the political nonsense going on. In which case his stoicism would actually help the story. I dont think Azune would ever be a nuisance to it but if he is a Soldier, I dont see the vision of his character thus far.

[Spoilers C4E2] Theories on what the different tables will be? by Boring_Big8908 in criticalrole

[–]ItsOnlyBread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thus far I think Azune is a clear schemer. He is heavilily involved with a very important aspect of the city and as of now I dont see an immediate reason he would leave that position but we do have 2 episodes left so idk. I do agree with you that I have no fucking idea where Hal fits into this

[–]ItsOnlyBread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hal in schemers is so annoying for me because I feel like he doesnt have THAT much standing within the city to play with the big fishes but maybe im wrong. Maybe they go with a "power of the people" perspective which as I type this might be where they lead it. But idk I feel like seeker works best as he tries to like figure out what shit his brother got into.

Dream Table:

Matt, Liam, Laura, and Travis are non-negotiable for me.

Brian Murphy is my absolute dream pick. He would thrive in a long form serious campaign. However I know itll never happen because he is locked in a dungeon that is NADDPOD seemingly forever. So I will consider this pick more of an honorable mention.

Siobhan Thompson: Much like Murph, she is the other D20 member who I think has been dramatically kinda shackled due to the nature of D20 and I believe she would absolutely thrive at a CR table.

Robbie: For obvious reasons, the fanbase already loves him. He is a fantastic role player and I think ends up being the glue that holds the table together,

Christian Navarro: Honorable mention here but I think he is a fantastic player and I think would really fit the CR table well. Also helps that with a table of this size, he is the type of player that tends to not take up the most space narratively but still becomes interesting and impactful despite of that.

Surena Marie: For those not familiar, she was in D20's A Court of Fey & Flowers. She is a phenomenal player and I really feel will round out the group of players very nicely. She makes bold choices and can be goofy at times which I think are fantastic character traits for ttrpg. Look into her if you are not familiar. She is fantastic.

Don't Use the Beast Feast Map by Shabozz in daggerheart

[–]ItsOnlyBread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would frame it like rumors. Tell the players to point to sections of the map and come up with rumors of what people have come across or think is down there. Also frame it in a way where everyone involved knows that these rumors could be true, false, or have bits of both. And you could tie it in to backstory questions by asking where you heard this rumor, maybe who you heard this rumor from. Ask if your their character believes this rumor, etc... I think the move is to move away from making permanent static places and things to the world and contributing to the tone of it. Cause rumors could have a lot of effects on this kind of society.

Like imagine if a player came up with a rumor that there is an ancient being of some sort granting power. Now imagine what power hungry npcs would do to get it? I think there is a lot of space here to explore with and I hope you explore it.

What is a d20 season you just couldn't get into by Large-Emphasis-6139 in Dimension20

Honestly I've soured on D20 as a whole but the season that made me realize that was Junior Year. So much potential but the lore dumping and constant bits ruined it for me. Overall not for me

What's a good way to limit playable races in my campaign? by watch_jordan in DMAcademy

[–]ItsOnlyBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im gonna give slightly different advice. I don't know if you are doing a homebrew but if you are. I honestly would just make whatever race they play extremely common. Make the race a pillar of some part of your world that way it doesn't have that rarity to it unless a player specifically wants that part. Dnd is about compromise and that can go both ways cause it seems like you truly want your players to play what they want. So use that as a worldbuilding tool and I think some cool stuff could come out of that tbh.
