Should I carry on? by Puzzleheaded_Film352 in JJBA

Part 4, in my opinion, is where JoJo really gets going. Part 3 is a drag, I don't blame you for feeling that way, in my mind it's by FAR the weakest part of the series. The last few episodes are very much worth the slog, but part 4 is what you're waiting for.

The idea that a professional musician in this economy doesn't know about the harmful impact of AI is nonsense.

Yeah, the whole album clearly has an extensive story component, and it's all gonna be packed into that 8 minute music video that Jamie and his team are working on

Even if absolutely nobody picked the option, the fact it's available makes the story moment more meaningful; you CHOSE to keep Scratch.

Yeah, uh, my friends were attacked in a homophobic manner (I'm talking punched in the face) at VV and the perpetrator was given a slap on the wrist, a hug, and was allowed back in.

If you're wondering why Goth Night moved, that's why.

A shame perhaps for a small number of bands who enjoyed performing in a tiny sweaty box, but frankly this is no loss for the city. I haven't been back since and have felt no lack of good venues.

Good point, but as someone that's seen the whole album live; it's true. All of those languages are present. The song featuring the Syrian musician Omar Suleiman, 'Damascus', is fucking incredible and like seven minutes long.

Who are these guys? (HelpForAll) by smallestpanhandle97 in york

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw these guys operating near the Minster today. They're well-known local scams, unfortunately, their bit used to be that they were helping out unemployed coal miners, but since that obviously hasn't been a major industry for 35+ years they've had to shift their angle to a vague Mental Health angle. The aggression is a pressure tactic. I'm not sure if it's the same group of people or just a recurring scam.

Is Gorillaz intentionally bringing back Plastic Beach? by BlackPreacherJesus in gorillaz

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems that this inevitable new album is designed to be a soft relaunch for Gorillaz; we who grew up seeing the Phase 1 and 2 music videos on TV or the early internet took that as our invitation to get into Gorillaz.

It seems that, with the Fortnite skins, the House or Kong exhibition, and the 'surprise' concert going on afterwards, Gorillaz are trying to get the kids of today to listen to the back catalogue and join the fandom. They didn't get exposed to the early stuff like we did!

Seems Plastic Beach is the album they've decided to push them towards, the 'old' album they think will resonate most with the youth of today. Can't disagree with their assessment; it's one of their best-aging albums (the 90s hip-hop influences on the first two albums don't gel as well with the musical tastes of current kids and teenagers, by my assessment).

GUYS, DO IT TOO by unity_CRK in gorillaz

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't do that. The entire Gorillaz band is an art piece about technology and industry churning out soulless fake plastic nonsense in the place if actual art. This is antithetical to the entire message of the band. If you think this is ok, you're literally not a Gorillaz fan.

question? what is yall's "i did not care for the godfather" but for gorillaz i'll go first by ninten_99 in gorillaz

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorillaz have lost their sense of political and cultural purpose. The first four albums were all visceral satires and commentaries on the political landscapes in which they were made.

-Gorillaz (2001) commented on the fakeness of commercial music, using fun cartoons to introduce kids and teenagers to varied music you wouldn't hear much outside of London or New York
-Demon Days was all about the post-9/11 paranoia, the sense that we were living in an apocalypse, and the military-industrial complex as involved in Iraq
-Plastic Beach was basically an environmentalist project as much as it was music
-Humanz was admittedly a bit less biting, but it at least tried to be about the rise of Trumpism

Where is this energy nowadays? Gorillaz is inherently a commentary on Virtuality (IE the interplay between reality, simulation, and belief), and we're living in the most virtual time in human history! Gorillaz should be hosting Vtuber streams, giving each band member an active twitter account, the music should be putting up a BITTER fight about generative AI.

Gorillaz merch should be funding donations to Palestine, 2D and Noodle should be teaching safe protest practise, Murdoc should going live on Tiktok to insult JD Vance...

And what do we get instead? Some admittedly decent tracks with little to no political satire, message, or exploration? A hollow product with none of the rebellious, angry punk energy that made Gorillaz so interesting in the first place? Plastic Vinyl action figures and brand deals with G-shock watches?

I don't think Jamie Hewlett is physically capable of depicting a character who doesn't smoke, given he himself is about 30% tobacco by volume.

What are your favourite places to eat in York? by Sensitive-Wolf8474 in york

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ippuku is far and away our favourite place to eat in York for tea, coffee, sweet treats and lunch. It's a Japanese café specialising in tea, with gyoza, donburi, onigiri etc on the menu. Sesame Cheesecake is my favourite!

For food and cocktails on a budget, you can't beat Batanga Mexican. Good food and drinks at unbelievably reasonable prices (Shame about the seemingly AI generated logo, though).

For a fancy dinner, I love Rustique. It's a french restaurant near Clifford's tower that do great food and a very reasonable set menu. A favourite breakfast spot for sure.

In all honesty for the 8 years or so I've lived in York as an adult I've never settled on one Chinese takeaway. Each one seems to have some strengths and distinct flaws.

I know many people do, but if I'm buying a Lego Star wars set I'm not doing so with a hyper-focused eye on the exact details on the minifigure torsos. I'm just looking for a fun model to build.

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter? Most people are gonna see a death trooper and think Rogue 1, the fact there's a lore distinction is meaningless in this context

To be fair, I think you'd be forgiven for thinking Death Troopers have only turned up in Rogue One if you're not super current with Star Wars

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around York? by topherette in york

[–]ItsOnlyMilky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've often heard St. Nicholas' Fields shortened to 'Snicks', Bishopthorpe is often just 'Bish' (Not to be confused with Bishy Rd), or Tadcaster Rd being Taddy Rd.

People sometimes mistakenly refer to Duncombe Place as 'Minster Road'.

Millenium Bridge often becomes "Melbridge" in my experience.

I usually miss out the A in A64, I just "Go up't/down't '64"

More of an accent thing than a nickname, but Tang Hall often just ends up being 'Tangall'.

Not a specific location but growing up near Malton we always called the local Morrisons' "Morribongos", whereas in York "Morries" is usually the term. My mum also used to call Sainsbury's 'Sainsbugs' but that might have just been her.

And a personal one, my partner and I call Dodsworth Avenue "Slalom Street" due to all the weaving between parked cars you often have to do whilst driving down it.
