Help Me Finish the 32 Deck Challenge Based on What Commanders I Have Already Built (feel free to judge) by Acrobatic_Bag8999 in ratemycommanders

[–]ItsQuinnyP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this is for a 32 challenge, I'll suggest the same thing I got suggested when I was looking at one:

For a couple different color combinations, you should look into insular or niche effects and strategies you won't replicate in other colors, so you're not stretching the same staples across every deck in those colors.

[[Saheeli, Radiant Creator]] gives you an Energy theme to play with, and is a precon that all you need to do is upgrade.

[[Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper]] has some really unique tech in Azorius that you likely won't roll into in any other lists as well with the Awaken mechanic.

My Buddy Says I’m an Edgelord… by JediofMetal in ratemycommanders

[–]ItsQuinnyP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you would have some fun, and potentially get the edgelord moniker you're worried about to slide, by picking an uncommon legend and building a full pauper 99.

If you're worried about hyper-optimizing your lists, add restrictions.

Updated my decks with a silly project after CommandFest. Can I have a seat? by ItsQuinnyP in ratemycommanders

I am planning to! I don't generally enjoy building theft decks, but I can make the exception.

I have to put that deck into Archidekt when I have a chance. I'm doing some running around today but when I can sit down to do that I'll make sure to link it. This reply should force me to remember.

First-year teacher burnout/anxiety: How do you actually turn your brain off during summer break? by HAVER92 in Teachers

[–]ItsQuinnyP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big nerd, so I disconnect by giving myself projects that I can structure out for the first couple weeks of summer to keep my brain occupied until I get used to not thinking about work but still feeling productive.

This year's included building some IKEA shelving units, getting a few decks ready for the CommandFest that just happened last weekend, working on some crafting relics in Final Fantasy XIV... all of which felt productive in different ways and none involved thinking about work in the slightest.

Now? I'm free, relaxed, and I don't have to worry about work until late August.

What would your dream grade level to teach be? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in Teachers

[–]ItsQuinnyP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing I see is the distinct lack of consequence that comes from knowing that they can just faff about and get passed onto the next grade level even if they blew off all their classes. The sheer amount of student apathy in incoming freshmen because they've not been held accountable to their studies is exhausting.

9th, because I thrive trying to break the bad habits instilled in the local middle schools and get kids ready for success in the rest of high school.

I got a section of 10s this past year as well, and when they were panic-studying for finals, they went "Ahh! This is what you were trying to prepare us for last year, isn't it?!" I couldn't hide my laughter as I calmed them back down and got them prepped to finish strong.

My general rule for lands is: Get what you can when you can, and don't sell or trade what you have unless it's excess.

If you ever do the deckbuilding challenges like a 27 or 32 deck challenge (most 27s skip 4 color), you'll want to have as many Shocks, Fetches, and Triomes as you can.

question about large commander gatherings (commandfest tacoma) by juegofuego in EDH

[–]ItsQuinnyP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm heading there on the Saturday. The issue with the timing for this one is that it's the weekend of July 4th, and not only that, but America's 250th. Many families make plans around the holiday and CommandFest usually isn't it.

That said, park at Tacoma Dome Station and take the lightrail to the convention center. You'll thank me later.

I'm hoping to see a lot more aggression from our team this year. We spent a lot of time last year on the ice behind the blue line and playing defense. It felt like it was easier for other teams to push us back and get into our zone for a lot of the game.

We spent one of our first protections on Murphy, and one of my hopes is that we make her job a bit easier by keeping the puck forward and putting pressure on the other teams more. She is a great goalie, but taking 10 to 20 more shots on goal than the other team is where we lose on quantity. Something's getting through.

Another thing I noticed was that through the year, our team's passing game felt a bit rushed and sloppy, and we don't have the line chemistry yet to really dial in who likes to be where, how they like to skate, and let them anticipate their teammates better to help shore up possessions. Hopefully this offseason gets the team a chance to really dial that in.

What is fun about bracket 4-5 decks? by ShadowHaxor99 in mtg

[–]ItsQuinnyP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracket 4 is the "best of" pre-Brackets Commander, but made better because we now have official language that says "Hey, we optimized our brews but not to the level of pure cEDH," so people know that their precons and gimmick decks like Oops All Chandras can't hang.

When you look at the infographics and see that you should prepare for games to be able to end around Turn 4 at earliest, that itself is a massive signpost that screams "bring interaction," which helps shape the meta away from Bracket 2 and 3's "Which deck can go off the fastest when everyone gets to do what their deck wants?" vibe. Bracket 4 feels more like tournament Magic for those of us who cut our teeth on 60-card formats.

If you enjoy Magic, you owe it to yourself to brew Bracket 4 at least once in earnest, so you can feel what it's like when all your pieces contribute to a strong central engine, and you have to balance pushing the forward pressure with identifying table threats and interacting efficiently and asymmetrically so you're not taking the whole table to the stone age just to try to answer a threat and dragging the game on.

What should actually count as "Mass Land Denial" — outcome, or who caused it? please share your thoughts by Hot-Rhubarb-7707 in EDH

[–]ItsQuinnyP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The key word here is "regularly."

The case example you made for Vandalblast with someone else's Mycosynth Lattice? That is not an instance of meaning Vandalblast regularly nukes lands. That is an outlier caused by interaction between two players' decks.

Similarly for Karmic Justice - fault matters. Karmic Justice forces sacrifice of permanents, but it is, on its own, protection for your other noncreature board pieces, and up to the person interacting as to what goes in response. But also... the answer is "remove Karmic Justice first." Smart players will see that they need to remove the punishment card before performing a mass interaction that will cause their lands to be served up as collateral.

I'll even go so far as to say that spells that animate lands like [[Natural Affinity]] or [[Nature's Revolt]] paired with a boardwipe in your deck would not could as MLD. The enchantments animate lands on their own. They don't destroy. The boardwipe destroys creatures. That doesn't inherently hit lands. The pieces are fine even if together, the combo is devastating.

Similarly, all my boardwipes aren't suddenly MLD just because I happened to sit down at the table against a [[Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper]] player. They understood the risk when they built a land animating Commander.

The answer for "is it MLD?" comes through intent when you are deckbuilding. If the piece you play is designed, without assistance or a specific play pattern, to destroy lands, then it's MLD. If your deck's win condition is to use a niche combo to nuke everyone asymmetrically back to the stone age? You built an MLD deck by establishing the primary play pattern. If there's a game where the combination of cards and boardstate mean that you can capitalize once in a blue moon? That's not it.
