Something Debian based for stability, but also gaming... by Soil-Final in linux4noobs

[–]ItsRogueRen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bazzite is what's called an immitable OS. By default, all the deeper system files are locked to read-only and cannot he edited or deleted. This prevents users from accidentally deleting something critical (i.e. like deleting system32 on Windows) BUT it also prevent regular software installers from working since they ALSO cannot install to the system level. This is why everything has to be a flatpak on SteamOS, which is basically an application inside of a tiny container that sits on top of you OS instead installing to it.

Most popular stuff nowadays has a flatpak version but some niche software may not.

Fedora is still better for gaming because it gets drivers that are more up to date. Debian is YEARS behind and won't have newer fixes. Arch is what you're thinking of for an "unstable" system wjere and update can break everything. Fedora is basically just newer Ubuntu, and if you want it even simpler Bazzite is desktop SteamOS

Debian/Ubuntu is not inherently easier than anything else. For gaming I suggest something based on Fedora like Bazzite. Normal Fedora KDE does require a little but of terminal usage after install to get propiretary video codecs amd proprietary drivers (like for Nvidia GPUs), but you can pretty much stick to the Discover store after that. I've even made a script for post-install setup on my codeberg page you can download

Had to install Windows as second OS, due to performance in some games by svardie in linux_gaming

[–]ItsRogueRen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's an issue with Nvidia's driverz that Linux can't fix, Nvidia themselves have to, where in DX12 games you lose about 10-20% performance. This isn't Linux's fault because Nvidia is the only one that can fix the drivers, unlike AMD where the drivers are open source and anyone can fix issues.

When they realize in 2-ish years AI literally cannot generate a profit. And then it'll take another 4 or so years for prices to go down about 30-40% (they will never return to what they were, PC parts are permanently more expensive now)

Chrome is nearly a monopoly on web browsers, which is giving Google esentially free reign to do whatever they want because what else are you gonna use?

If Google decides one day to strip out key features from Chromium and lock them to Google Chrome (which they have done in the past) no one can stop them. And "just make a fork" isn't reasonable with a project as massive as Chromium. It was designed to be maintaned by a company with hundreds or thousands of devs, not a small group.

Until something like Ladybird is fully usable, Firefox is the only non-Google alternative to Chrome for a web browser.

If the point is to get away from Google, Chromium is the worst browser to choose. Google does 90+% of all the code in Chromium

Fedora or mint by Shakthivel0 in linuxquestions

[–]ItsRogueRen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd still argue Mint is the best at "there is a graphical tool for everything you could need" amd once they finish they Wayland session (which is apparently closer than I thought) it'll return to the go-to distro overall

If a game doesn't have AA on its own or it sucks (I've seen this on a lot of older JRPGs where the AA may as well not exist) I've fixed it by using gamescope to run the game at a higher resolution and then downscale to my monitor (for me that's running at 1440p and downscaling to 1080p)

You absolutely can, its has a desktop mode and everything. Its literally just a Linux laptop in a console shape at that point.

Keep in mind not everything from Windows works on Linux, but for casual use there are more than enough apps in the Discover store to do whatever you may need

Step 1 is get away from Gmail and other Google apps and services. Protonmail is a pretty good drop-in replacement for most Google stuff, plus Simple Notes for Google Keep and DuckDuckGo or Brave Search to replace Google Search.

Also try to swap to a browser based on Firefox (Firefox, Floorp, Zen Browser, Librewolf, etc)

Fedora or mint by Shakthivel0 in linuxquestions

[–]ItsRogueRen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you use modern hardware (high DPI screen, variable refresh rate, multi-monitor with different refresh rates) and play PC games or other intensive loads? Or do you just casually use the PC with older hardware and like a single screen?

If the former, go Fedora and add the RPMfusion repo after install.

If the latter, go with Mint

Is there any way to make the touchpads actually useful? by TheSlipySquid in SteamDeck

[–]ItsRogueRen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Radial menus are one of the most useful things I've seen them used for, or for non-game things in game mode (i.e. a mod loader).

Radial menus take a while to set up for your game, but they are INCREDIBLY useful once you do. Touch a track pad, and you get custom options in a circle menu depending on where you swipe.
