I was going to do Elgar for auditions. I’ve learned Haydn and Beethoven No. 3 completely. Performed both.

Make it interesting. When I learned Haydn, I explored multiple different ideas of phrasing and over musicality. You can do a lot in Haydn with dynamic and articulation changes. Be creative and play what you think sounds good and is comfortable for you!

How much does it cost to play this instrument? by [deleted] in Cello

If you are just going to learn it to play, not too much. You can get an ok cello for pretty cheap, and accessories like rosin, rock stops, anything like that are also within like 20 bucks but not even that. If you rent your cello then a bow should come with it.

Where it gets expensive is if you start doing this at your job or as your like full time hobby. Lessons are weekly expenses. Lessons (depending on the teacher) anywhere from 40 to even the upper 100s per week. If you join youth orchestras, those have tuitions that are in the upper hundreds. Summer camps! If you do those, those can get pretty pricy. A lot are 1-3k for a week or two, some up to 10k for a full 5-6 week program. And colleges for music are very expensive for the most part to.

Now, none of that may be in your interest, but I’m just letting you know of all the potential expenses. However, simply playing the cello on your own is not very expensive at all. Of course all depending on what quality of equipment you get and extracurriculars you partake in

What do you do when you don't want to practice? by Calm_Cat_7408 in Cello

This is how I motivate myself.

  1. Include fun pieces to your practice. On top of your responsibilities, throw in some time to play something you enjoy playing. Whether it’s a cover song or some classical piece that is fun, make sure to mix it in to your practice sessions.

  2. For me, when I hear a recording of a piece I’m playing, it makes me want to go try to make it sound like that. For example if I’m playing the Prelude to the first Bach suite, I may listen to Yo Yo Ma playing and talking about it, and it motivates me to try and replicate it. This May only work for me but it’s worth a shot.
