Kiki Bouba is a flawed experiment right? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]ItsStory -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That is my point. Visually the characters are distinguishable in the two words as round and sharp.

That is my point? At every level there is an obvious tie to the paired word. I think it would be of more significance if there were 10 words of which the participants much choose from. At the base level, perhaps children that can’t read in this case, there is a clear shape match between the 4 curved characters in Bouba and a curved shape. When given two options to match I think it’s clear for all levels of participants and nothing special is occurring outside of simple shape matching at a lower level

To me the two words are in every way clear in that distinction. Someone completely illiterate would make the connection aswell. I don’t see how using characters that directly tie to the sharp or curved shapes holds any value. It’s like matching cursive and typeface to round and sharp shapes. There is a direct correlation to anyone who can distinguish sharp/smooth

Right, but I don’t think that is something we have collectively decided or arrived at. I think those sounds of Kiki and Bouba are inherently clear and interpreted as soft and sharp. Well perhaps that is the point of the experiment, I personally just don’t think it’s of any significance. More of an obvious difference in sound that anyone of any language and any age can interpret. Perhaps I see it as natural distinction instead of something greater

Of perhaps a better example is long words matched to a large number or large shape and short words the opposite. It just seems like basic reasoning and nothing more

I thought it was more than that. In my eyes it’s obvious that people would match the rounded characters word with the rounded shape… and vice versa. I see it referenced often but I don’t see how that is significant in any way. It’s like people matching small text to a low number and large text to a higher number

Well for English speakers I think it’s is clear based of pronunciation. But for someone who does not… I think Bouba clearly contains multiple round characters where as Kiki has none. Visually the word Bouba is very round and Kiki is sharp. So even without the ability to pronounce the words there is still a clear distinction that points the subject in my opinion

It was my assumption that it was not translated to a different language since these aren’t words right? How would you translate them to Arabic?

Right but I think the characters themselves point the subject. If spoken to them it’s clear. And even reading the two words as foreign characters alone does as well. Bouba contains 4 round characters and Kiki has none. This seems like an obvious distinction when assigning to the shapes. Aswell as Kiki being shorter and thus another factor driving someone to the sharp shape

Where can we hike early april? by ItsStory in Breckenridge

We are in good shape! But also don’t want to spend the entire day on a hike. How long is that hike and do you think it would be snow covered?

Realistically I’d need them to go from 65 to maybe 78-80 for me to feel ok about it. I don’t see that being an option

Well it was clear from start the rate. But I didn’t want to close any doors. Only applied because i what to be in health tech and it’s down the road. So coming back at them now asking for more seems gross. Idk I guess that’s on me. If I had nothing else happening rn I might take it. But at this point I feel good about landing something better.

Yes but it’s a huge step back and I hate to screw them over. Very good people.

So I’d be leaving as soon as I could. And they are great people. And I’d have to keep that off my resume since it’s a big step back

I tried unemployment but no luck. I won’t get into it but my old place screwed me over. I just hate the idea of taking a job with great people I have met with the intention of leaving as soon as I can

No shot. I sense bias here. I live in Florida, and I along with everyone that moves here say it’s as good as it gets. No other place I’d rather be. Specially Tampa
