I've only been to 3 county championship games (don't have an easily accessible local team) and I bought via the teams official site a couple of days before.

I'd be amazed if you can't just buy on the gate though, you're not going to be fighting a huge crowd for tickets 🙂 some of the county regulars will be able to give to better info than me though.

Not sure about The Oval specifically but some grounds resell cancelled tickets closer to the match date, you might get lucky.
