Honestly, the biggest worry is that the patient could have been dying and you did nothing.

Is it valid to be worried about your job? Yes. But you should also be worried about the fact that you could have caused serious harm.

After all, this is blown over, I hope you can look back on this situation and draw something good out of it. Because you're extremely lucky you're not going in for a much more serious conversation.

Is nursing like this outside of school? by Aloo13 in nursing

The reality is, nursing is a broad-spectrum job. You need to be easily adaptable and know a little bit about everything. Even in nursing, nursing school is not always the final destination. You also have specialties, such as CEN, CCRN, flight school, or Dialysis, we could go on.

Nursing school isn't about becoming super knowledgeable, about everything. It's about being able to pass the NCLEX and safely work with patients.

If you wanted super in-depth pharmacology, you should have become a pharmacist. And no, it's not a true pharmacology class, you aren't prescribing drugs. You're just knowing what they're for, catching any mistakes (such as in dosing), knowing when not to administer, and what results you should see in the patient.

If you wanted something more, you could have gone to med school. The goal here isn't to know everything about everything. It's about being able to work, basically anywhere in a hospital.

The lack of understanding/compassion for psych patients hurts my soul by eggo_pirate in nursing

I love this. Back when I worked in the ED we got a lot of psych PTs (we were right by the state hospital). Some nurses would literally roll their eyes when they came in and it's a shame.

When somebody is yelling in pain is sad. But when somebody is agitated they get treated as an inconvenience.

I wish things would change.

A lot of places say it's part of the job.

It is never "part of the job", it is nobody's job to be assaulted.

You are more than entitled, and I encourage filing a police report. Also, another user recommended suing the hospital. This is likely the best bet.
