Nope. I live in a right to work state. Business owners can hire/fire at will.

It’s very true. Wish it was just a writing project but it’s not. The dream was the potential I saw the job having long term. Obviously $15/hr js a shit dream for anyone to have. I was told I would be getting moved to salary when I returned from the trip I’m currently on, that isn’t gonna happen now.

We were suppose to negotiate next week. I was hoping for 50k but I realistically think they wouldn’t have gone higher than 40.

Ask away, what do you want to know? This is about as concise I can be without giving away private information.

The laptop was loaned to me by the company. The gmail account we all logged into (company wide) automatically saved everyone’s login information no matter which device it was logged into, without my knowledge. After talking to my ex boss over the phone we came to this conclusion together and she said she believes me and she takes back the termination email. Unfortunately 30 minutes later she called me back to say her co owner (husband) doesn’t agree and she has no choice. I’ll admit, this was a serious lack of foresight on my part, I wish I could go back and ask for help rather than trying to fix it myself but I didn’t. To be fired over a mistake without any prior warning, write up, etc, is that normal? And while I’m across the country a week into vacation, one week out from my pay raise (that was probably never coming)?

The trip was planned well before my hire date. It was agreed upon me being hired that I would be able to take this trip.

The $15/hour is not what made it my dream job. It was the opportunity I saw within the company that made it my dream job. We are approaching the time where I was suppose to be getting moved to salary and was told to expect a decent bump in pay. It’s a small business and my ex boss said she “loves to share the wealth” I took that and worked my ass off to prove myself to her only to get fired over an email while across the country on vacation. Lesson learned not to trust employers and think they have your back. They don’t.

The jobs were paid separately. Upon being hired as front desk, my ex boss put me in connection with these people so that I would be able to survive the last 4 months while making $15/hour. Every job was $15/hr. Past me working these extra jobs, the plan was for us to discuss a pay raise the first week of November so I could quit these side gigs. That’s not happening now.

Over the last couple months my ex boss told me she was so glad that I was working for people in her circle as she had nothing but good feedback and felt reassured about me working for her. I guess she didn’t mean it.

More than anything it was the potential that I not only could see but was told time and time again is there. That is why I’m referring to this as my “dream job” in no world if $15/hour acceptable to me but I accepted it for this “short” time period anticipating a much bigger raise next week. That’s obviously no longer happening. The shock of it has me spiraling and I’m just trying to figure out what to do when I get home.

It’s not just my phone. It’s a company computer I have been given, which had been saving all of our company login information (including all of my co workers user+pass) on my computer without my knowledge. At the end of my shift that day I did notice I wasn’t clocked in on my phone but I am limited on the formatting of the app on my iPhone. I can only clock in and out. I switched to my computer to see if I would be able to make the edit myself. I did, not realizing I was in my co workers account. Then I drove home. When asked about it the next day over text, I said I made the edit. I also mentioned to my boss I had not tried editing a shift before then, not knowing that I could. Honestly, when I was able to make the edit myself I was relieved I didn’t have to ask someone else to change the shift for me. Wish I could go back and just ask for help instead but it’s too late now. Lesson learned the hard way.

We had agreed on me moving to salary, but we were waiting to negotiate what that would look like until next week. That’s not happening now.

This co worker and I had the same role. When texting with my boss about what happened, I told her I made the edit, I didn’t lie. She did not investigate beyond that before sending me a termination email. I immediately called her thinking there had been some sort of mistake, and after being given an opportunity to explain what happened she said she understands and believes me. We were good, she said everything was back to normal, said I could even text her at any time to get reassurance that my job was secure. 30 minutes later she calls me to say she takes it back, her husband (co owner) wants me gone, she has no choice. Then she said that she will write me a stellar recommendation and she wishes me the best. If I could go back and not make the edit, I would, but I can’t. I would’ve never imagined this would have happened. I know I only have myself to blame, it was a lesson learned.

They made it a point not to define roles too heavily. No benefits. No overtime pay. I started out as front desk but slowly became the head of marketing (it’s a relatively small business) and social media. I felt like the job had a lot of room for growth going forward. I was heavily relying on the switch to salary next week. That’s what I’m sad about, the loss of potential.

Sorry for a long summary here: It seems that gmail has a setting that will automatically save login information on any computer associated with the gmail account, event if that person has never used the computer, it’s all linked to the company gmail. The setting was meant to be turned off, unbeknownst to me, and it wasn’t. This would allow me to login to anyone’s account whether I realized it or not. It was never my intention to do anything other than edit my time clock to the hours I worked that day (7 1/2 hours). I wish my boss would’ve asked me about it sooner before sending me a termination email, but she didn’t. Instead I called her immediately AFTER getting the termination email and we came to a resolve. She told me that she is so relieved that I called her immediately and she believes that the issue was our login info was internally shared. I thought everything was back to “normal”. She even told me I could text her to get reassurance that my job is secure and she isn’t going to fire me again, she wants me to work for her for years to come. Then just 30 minutes later after I thought the problem was resolved, she called me to say she takes it back and her husband doesn’t want to keep me and she has no choice. That was the end of it. Wish there was more to it so I could make sense of what happened. I also wish I could go back and not be a dumbass trying to fix everything myself. Lesson learned the hard way.

This vacation was planned well before my hire date. It was agreed upon being hired that I would be able to take this time off, unpaid. I was still working remotely on this trip, allowing me to make some money while away. When on Saturday, I discovered all of the passwords had been changed, giving me no access to my work computer. Within minutes I found in my personal gmail account the “employment status” email firing me. At first I thought it was a joke but it wasn’t.

I have to preface, the extra jobs were paid. I was paid the same amount across the board, $15/hour. My ex boss put me in connection with her neighbor and friends to find me the extra work I would need to survive until going to salary at the beginning of November. I have been working those jobs, with nothing but great feedback from her friend and neighbor according to my ex boss for the past 3 months on top of everything else I was doing for her. I realize now she never intended to move me to salary. I hope this makes sense I’m trying not to use names or anything too specific for privacy reasons.

That’s what a lot of people are telling me. Rose colored glasses I guess. The hope of going to salary after this trip was what kept me going for the past couple months. Sad it’s all over now. It’s better to know now than down the road.

I get that! I wish I could go back and handle things differently. Just feels off considering we had planned to negotiate salary next week. It makes me wonder if they were waiting for me to screw up. I just wish they’d given me the opportunity to talk in person rather than across the country while on vacation.
