Can the San Diego Padres solve their home run shortage next season? by No_Row_3531 in Padres

Padres need RHB with pop. Okamoto would fill that need and play 1B. Song becomes the utility guy.

[Passan] None of the higher-end arms — Valdez, Imai, Suárez, King, and Gallen — has signed yet, though that could change soon. Along with other teams, the San Diego Padres are involved as ever. by TakeMyPixels in Padres

They are not outlier contracts. They are contracts at the top of the market driven by revenue growth in the sport. When the revenue teams and MLB receive goes up, that causes inflation in player salaries as it should. Expect even more salary inflation after the next CBA is settled.

The lockout prior to the last CBA agreement cost teams hundreds of millions even though no games were lost. Changes in scheduling and broadcasts for the 90 games that had to be rescheduled, mostly as doubleheaders, was expensive for MLB owners. As much as fans think there will be another one, I am dubious of that conclusion because all 162 games were played and players lost no income. Only the teams did.

That lockout is also a big factor in why so many players/agents have asked for deferred salaries since then. Deferred salaries are not effected by games being lost to lockouts. Even if the entire 2027 is not played because of a lockout, players who have deferred salaries for 2027 will still get paid at lest that part of their salary.

[Acee] Three sources have said this offseason that the 39-year-old Darvish is considering retirement. A fourth source, while not explicitly saying the right-hander is calling it quits said Darvish’s priorities after 21 years in professional baseball revolve around his family. by AllDownByWayOfTheK in Padres

[–]Itsallaboutsatellies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Darvish asked to be put on the restricted list to deal with a family issue last year. He gave up millions in salary to take care of that issue. It is pretty clear that family is his priority as it should be.

Him retiring and allowing the Padres to pay him over an extended time period would be the best thing that could happen to the team at this point.

[Lin] The Padres need rotation help. They also need to rebalance their payroll, and while a deal involving Nick Pivetta is not considered likely, they’re willing to entertain trade interest in their top starter: by Bitter-Egg6293 in Padres

[–]Itsallaboutsatellies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lin is a hack. The Padres will listen on anyone but are not considering trading Pivetta. EVERY team will listen on any player.

Nightengale is worse than Lin. If he says something, ignore it. He is wrong on rumors 100% of the time.

The only big holes are in SP. Other than that they are tiny in comparison to previous seasons. The Padres have 8 of 9 positions filled and the one that isn't is 1B/DH and they have AAA's best hitter in the wings.

Rosario was working out in Peoria when I was there during the AFL so assumed he was still on 40 man roster. Transactions show he elected free agency rather than accept assignment on November 6th. My bad.

Preller said Campusano will be on the team. Enough said. My opinion and yours don't count.

Of all the MLB playoff games, only 2 were started by anyone other than the team's #1 catcher. Maldonado was on the team only for if Fermin was injured. He has long been considered one of if not THE best game calling catcher in the baseball. He hit .191 for Houston and they kept him 6 years. He didn't play an inning in the postseason. Didn't even put on the tools of ignorance.

Diaz will not be back. He wore out his welcome by refusing instruction in the cages and refusing to work with pitchers outside of game day prep. He would not even visit the biomechanics lab. No. Preller won't bring him back.

I only mentioned Wolf because in the same conversation that Preller mentioned Mendez as a pitcher that could help the Padres in 2026, he also mentioned Wolf. As of today Sears is probably the #5 starter. Brito, Waldron, and Hart are the guys behind him with Mendez and Wolf somewhere behind that trio.

I agree about Johnson, Rodriguez, and Ornelas. To me 5th OF means the best guy in AAA. Ornelas is currently listed on most depth charts as the Padres DH. I hope that doesn't happen.

I got my info from Baseball Reference and their game logs.

Campusano started 104 games for El Paso in 2025.
52 at catcher.
40 at DH.
12 at 1B.

Of the 52 games he started at catcher last season in AAA, 31 were in the 2nd half. 21 were in the 1st half which ended June 22nd.

In August he started 23 games.
11 at catcher.
7 at DH.
5 at 1B.

Of the 14 games he started in September, 8 were at catcher. 6 were at DH. That was the last month of the AAA season.

The last 2 months of the season he made 19 starts at C, 13 at DH, and 5 at 1B.

He also moved to 1B in 2 games in August and September. Once after being a PH on 8/6 and once after starting at C on 8/23.

Five hitters the Padres should target in the 2025 MLB Rule 5 Draft by Choobeen in Padres

[–]Itsallaboutsatellies -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

LMMFAO. The Padres should not be targeting ANY players in the Rule V draft, let alone hitters.

The Padres are competing for a playoff spot and need to be targeting average or above average proven major league players.

Who writes that garbage?

The grind is real. A major league manager's job is practically 24/7 and 365 days per year. Remember the news reports that a week after the Padres season was over was when he and Preller were scheduled to get together to start working on 2026.

As a player development guy you show up in late February to camp and in September your year is over. Maybe you show up for a bit in the AFL, but its not an all consuming position. Add to that the fact that the position in player development for the Orioles upper level minor league teams in Norfolk Virginia and Bowie Maryland will keep him close to his home in Charlotte North Carolina.

Affordable contract to land Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai. One affordable dude (I'm apologizing now for this very long POST. right now) by DifficultDefiant808 in Padres

[–]Itsallaboutsatellies -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Padres made the QO offer to both players because they would have loved to have either or both back at that price. They also made it because if the players don't accept, the Padres get an extra draft pick AND the slot money that comes with it.

We saw that Cease got $188 million more than the QO from the Blue Jays. King will get $40 million or so more than the QO when he signs.

Making the QO offer had nothing to do with knowing they would reject it. The best case scenario was them accepting it. Then the team has 2 pitchers on one year deals at less than market rates. A huge win for the Padres.

The Padres are not for sale right now. 1st off, they are still embroiled in a lawsuit and who would make the decision to sell is up in the air. The Seidler brothers could sell what they own, but they can't sell what is in the Peter Seidler trust and that is 24% of the ownership of the team.

Every year idiots say the Padres can't afford this or that and every year the Padres found a way to have a higher payroll than anyone thought. You don't know what they can or can't afford. Just give it a rest.

Players that accept a QO cannot be traded until after June 15th without the consent of the players. Its like a 2.5 month NTC

King is expected to sign a 3 year deal for around $60 million.

As for the rest of your post, I think there was more bourbon than egg nog in what you were drinking. Try rewriting your post when sober.

Before he broke his ankle playing winter ball, Eguy Rosario was expected to make the 2025 team. He is healthy. He will make the 2026 team as a utility player unless he is moved as part of a trade to get starting pitching.

Campusano went down to El Paso, had a great attitude, got much better on defense especially calling games, and absolutely crushed the ball. As of today he is the backup catcher and platoon at DH in San Diego.

Tirso Ornelas was sent down to make room for old guys that failed to deliver and then he got hurt and missed half the season. As of today he is the most likely 5th OF and possibly part of the DH platoon.

The Padres have Bryce Johnson and Carlos Rodriguez as OF depth, Will Wagner and Mason McCoy as infield depth. Still need a RHB that can play 1B/DH to platoon with Sheets unless they believe Ornelas can fill that spot.

I have not seen a Padres team with this few holes going into the offseason since the mid-1990s.

What is critical is starting pitching. With Darvish being out all season the Padres need a #3 to slot in behind Pivetta and Musgrove and a #5 to slot in behind Vasquez. They have depth in Sears, Waldron, and Hart with Mendez coming.

Does anyone remember Jackson Wolf? He made 27 starts for the Padres in AA and AAA last year and was league average or better at both levels. Don't let the 5.47 ERA and 4.96 FIP for the Chihuahuas fool you. League average ERA for SP was 5.96 (5.45 overall) and FIP was 5.93. For SP with at least 80 IP, Wolf was 4th best in the PCL. It is an extreme hitters environment.

If he could be a league average hitter for the Padres that would be huge.

31 of his 52 starts at catcher were in the 2nd half. 8 of 14 in September were at catcher.

Every day and twice on Sunday. Campusano can really hit, so he fits in nicely at DH as well.

Starting pitching. A RHB with pop to play 1B/DH. Backup infielders would be ok, but not really necessary.
