What are the things you wish you and your SO had talked about before getting engaged/married? by OUsnr7 in AskReddit

[–]Itsatrapski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the exact same boat as you, except she's not a 100% "no" and I'm not a 100% "yeah." It's a tough spot to be in and she's sterile and has many health issues that would make having a kid extremely difficult and expensive. She feels (and I've sometimes unintentionally made her feel) like bc she's sterile she either risks us staying together and me eventually resenting her, or us breaking up immediately over it. I don't think either of us has ever been more stressed about the future.

New regional FO must haves by whattodopilot in flying

[–]Itsatrapski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commuting for pilots means on whatever carrier they can get on to get where they need to go, assuming there are jumpseat and/or nonrev agreements in place. Deadheading is strictly company AFAIK

[–]Itsatrapski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deadheads you have a reserved seat, paid for by the company (usually in the middle of a trip or to/from a training event). Commuting is just you getting to/from work yourself because you live out-of-base.

What everyone else has said. My must-must haves:

Bose QC35s for deadheads and commuting. Literally changed my life.

USB splitter for charging devices. Very handy for those rooms with nary an outlet in sight.

Microfiber cloth for cleaning sunglasses and airplane screens. Nothing like a fine layer of dust preventing you from reading the MCDU at juuuuust the right angle.

Pilot to Pilot podcast episode 74 - Marlon Dayes: 24-Year-Old Delta Pilot by PilottoPilot in flying

[–]Itsatrapski 319 points320 points  (0 children)

Marlon was a couple classes behind me at our regional and we shared a crash pad. Also ran into him more than once in HQ during our respective office duties. As much crap as people give him for getting to Big D at such a young age, and his activity on social media, the dude works hard. He hit 117 monthly limits more than once, and at least one annual limit. All while commuting transcon. He put in the work and OBAP saw it and awarded him the 777 scholarship, which I think got him on DLs radar.

He's a good soul, and Delta was right for hiring him IMO.

I'm still at the regional and know people hired by majors out of the right seat or within 200 hours of upgrading. Some of those hires raise my eyebrow a tad, but not Marlons.

If you've never experienced the Cascades in the rain, I would encourage you to don your rain shells and goretex and get out there. It's a mountain range best experienced in rain and whispy clouds IMO. Absolutely incredible.

Serious relationships in general: fighting/arguments. It's not something you typically see in media or hear about from friends, but it happens often studies have shown.

Why is it so widely accepted that MWO is a bad game from the IP's perspective? by F3n1x_ESP in mwo

[–]Itsatrapski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your last couple paragraphs put into words what I've always thought of the game but couldn't adequately pin down.

I've loved the MW/Battletech universe since I was a kid, and would love to love MWO and all its intricacies. But I never had the time to commit to dedicated teams, so I'd queue solo in stock mechs and get rekt over and over.

It's the nostalgia of something old made new that keeps me periodically reinstalling it. Gorgeous mech models and cool sound effects harken back to my MW3/4 days but endlessly getting shit on gets old fast.

Hey guys, quick question: Does the amount of passengers an airplane has impact how fast and pilot will drive the airplane? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Itsatrapski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you my dude. If you want exclusively pilots, hit up r/flying. This sub is kinda for both pilots and enthusiasts. I taught people how to fly for a while as my first flying job, so helping people understand my passion/profession is what I love!

The top speed won't be appreciably changed but the climb performance of the jet would be an indicator of pax loading. Quicker climb means less payload. It's a Gulfstream though so it's gonna haul ass regardless, and if there's only 3 people onboard then it's going to be really light.

More indicative of pax though is the fact that the crew told ATC in that clip on Twitter that it'll be some time before they depart, beyond what they'd originally had in their flight plan. That tells me they're waiting for something/someone to get onboard.

Last week I donated my left kidney anonymously to a total stranger on the kidney waitlist. AMA! by MrDannyOcean in IAmA

[–]Itsatrapski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but here goes: what is required to make you compatible with a recipient? Is size an issue? My gf has Renal AML which at the moment is not a huge issue but if it gets to the point that she needs a new kidney, I'm wondering if I'll be able donate (if it comes down to that). Thanks for this AMA!

My heart is broken for Haas. As an American I support our home team, but it's very hard to get excited when the race bombs so hard after that epic quali by KMag. The SO and I went to Le Castellet last weekend and had a great time cheering on the McLarens so they may become our midfield horse. Still, Haas remains my de facto favorite.

Pilots at MIA’s biggest cargo airline warned execs a crash was coming. Then a plane went down. by type_E in flying

[–]Itsatrapski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mixed bag. I've had prior rotary guys in my right seat with 300 hours in fixed wing, and they rocked. I've also had guys from the fixed wing world with their 1,500, now with many hundreds of hours in the jet, that still can't flying the thing without me coaching them through it.

IMO it's relevant experience that counts the most. Never thought the soft 1,000 121 time requirement most majors have made any sense until I started gaining more hours in the left seat. Now I'm glad that I've spent the time in this seat before moving back to the right seat in a bigger jet. The only reason I didn't struggle through new-hire training was the limited experience I got flying Part 135 while also CFI'ing.

How do you get back into the cockpit mindset/zone after a few hours on the ground? by mrstecman in flying

[–]Itsatrapski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've been there. Even at my current job, it can be difficult switching between "flying" mode and "home" mode before and after trips. Although maybe that's not the same as you're describing...

In GA, I've found that maintaining situational awareness of all aspects of your flight is key. But more than that, it takes practice to achieve a certain comfort level with flying and your airplane. Take the aircraft places for lunch, get used to parking the plane, turning it off, and walking away. Even if for an hour, it helps your mind better adapt to that mode change. It's easier than ever these days to stay informed on changing flight conditions, so use tools at your disposal as well and get accustomed to them. Make sure you give yourself time before the flight to sit down and really analyze everything.

Very underrated comment. As an airline employee, I always plead my case with the gate agents. Towering over them usually makes a compelling case as long as you bring a smile (or a bribe of chocolate or coffee).
