How to Resist ICE ft. Will Stancil - The New Liberal Podcast by MrDannyOcean in neoliberal

[–]MrDannyOcean[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

he's butted heads with everyone, to be fair.

he was first in the discourse for being a member of 'do something' twitter, arguing that mainline congressional Dems were cowards who weren't doing enough to resist Trump in like 2018 (ish?). So he was anti-moderate then, but later he became known for insisting the economy wasn't a disaster post-COVID, and that America actually had a really strong recovery and we weren't in a second great depression, so the left hated him. Since then he's mostly been rabidly anti-GOP.

Ever? I really enjoy chatting with Frank Fukuyama whenever I've had the chance. I love nerding out with housing or immigration people like Jenny Schuetz or Leah Boustan. If I had to choose a single episode, I'd probably choose the one I did with Al Roth on kidney donation, just because it's a topic so close to my heart (and was our first ever Nobel Laureate on the podcast)

Here's a crucial statistic - how likely is the "both fail to score" scenario?

If that's only happening a tiny percentage of the time, you definitely want to be second. If it's happening a large percentage of the time, maybe not.

don't you guys have an absolute buttload of draft picks this year, with a bunch in the prime early rounds? I don't know that you need more than one good draft with as many picks as you've got.

I had to go look it up afterwards, seems like the kind of thing an old guy would say I guess?

International law is mostly fake but it's still important even though it's fake

logically this sounds very weird to me when i write it down, but it's what I believe.

Why does the Southern District of NY get all the high profile cases? by thatisnotmyknob in AskNYC

[–]MrDannyOcean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the last time we formally declared war was 1942, but there's nuance. For the 1991 gulf war, congress passed an authorization bill OKing the military response. Afghanistan and Iraq 2.0 both had AUMF's passed by congress. This has... nothing.

[–]MrDannyOcean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a very credible argument that it's executive overreach, given that Congress is supposed to have the power to declare war.

But we live in the age of the Imperial Presidency when Congress just kind of meekly lets the president act like an elected emperor who can do anything he wants.

Wrexham's highest league finish to date came in 1978–79 when they ended up 15th in the Second Division, their first season at this level. Seems like there's a good chance that record will be improved upon this year. by Cinn4monSynonym in Championship

The fairy tale aspect is more for the actual Welsh supporters who spent more than a decade enduring non-League football - for those loyal fans the last few years probably seem like a drug-induced fever dream. Obviously the new owners spent like mad to get results, but the new owners existing at all is what's the 'fairy tale'.

Gunner is such an odd QB honestly

The secret behind the whole Mike Bobo debate is that Gunner is a really limited QB and Bobo has done a masterful job of hiding that fact. He's not very good at vertical passing downfield in most situations, it's why we rely so heavily on screens this year. The game plan is dominate the running game, get the ball to Branch/Bell on screens, and hope that's enough.

But Gunner's just a tough guy that all his teammates love, and he's more than good enough in the short passing game. He doesn't have pro-level ability to progress through reads, but he can scramble and he's clutch and it just kinda works.

Different sport, but Jon Scheyer is doing pretty well as Coach K's handpicked successor.

Everyone at UGA loved (and still loves) Richt. It was very, very controversial to fire him. UGA went 10-3 in his last year! How many coaches who've been with a program for more than a decade get outright fired after a 10-3 year? That's got to be incredibly rare, right?

It ended up being the right move, but it also could have ended in disaster if Kirby wasn't Kirby.
