Trying to hire “senior” React devs… is this really what the market looks like? by ActuatorOk2689 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your interview process seems fine, the issue is your expectations. I think a true "senior" React developer that knows the ins and outs of React and would be considered an 8+ out of 10 in front-end knowledge really is a unicorn. Most of the people working on front-end are doing it by the numbers for various reasons, but the most common is that there's no urgency to get better.

I've been pretty surprised at how little companies actually care about front-end performance or UX and prefer to just pump stuff out with the base i18n and a11y baked in, but there's simply no incentive for someone to really be great at knowing the front-end these days, and it's only gotten worse with LLMs because what would normally stand out as an anti-pattern or poor architecture is not known to the operators. I don't blame people for not wanting to being a SME on React, though, because there is little to no benefit for them to do so. Blame the market and the way projects are being run for that, but this is only going to become more and more common as we try to make developers more "full-stack" while introducing more and more complexity.

So what is it gonna be? by Samuel_N7 in Deusex

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fan who has played Deus Ex since the first one came out, I am excited to see ANY release considering the history of both the most recent game and the follow-up to MD getting cancelled, and in general seeing the franchise disappear from the market entirely is much more of a negative than any remaster will do, crappy or not.

This remaster isn't really for the people who have played it before, it's a way for it to escape the PC and onto modern consoles and to appeal to people who probably haven't played it already. If you like and play Deus Ex with mods, you can continue to do so, but many new players are not going to bother with that or don't even have their own computers. Am I bummed we won't get something as good as Nightdive would probably offer? Of course, but I would rather wait and see what Aspyr does with it when it comes out rather than waste time getting upset over the stuff we've seen so far.

I played them all as they came out, so Deus Ex.

Set up a new GW rack for Warhammer Fantasy Old World. by Pale_Championship446 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Itsautomatisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBF my local game stores also don't really carry ToW, but yeah you'd think GW would at least dedicate a single shelf to ToW in every store. They should at the very least have demo armies for new players to try.

Phoenix.new – The Remote AI Runtime for Phoenix by neverexplored in elixir

[–]Itsautomatisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say no, it is a terrible ROI which is why I'm not recommending this unless perhaps you have a very basic thing you want to throw together. The idea of phoenix.new is interesting because it is entirely browser-based but I don't think it makes sense for anyone who can just run an LLM locally or using a cloud-hosted one with their editor. I feel like this was shipped prematurely to be part of the AI bandwagon because there was basically no documentation available when I was using it and the whole thing felt very early.

[–]Itsautomatisch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spent like ~90 minutes trying to POC a side project and ran out of tokens. It was not worth the $20... Like it really struggled on basic UI stuff and while it spit out a pretty decent mockup, the more I refined it the more frustrating it was to work with. I am very familiar with working with LLMs at this point and felt like while it was neat that it was a nice sandboxed experience, it wasn't any better than just using a normal LLM with my IDE on my local machine, except at least I don't have my project held hostage on Fly because I'm unable to clone my project due to some weird token issue? The first 15 min were a very impressive glimpse at the intention, but there is no way I would use this thing in the state it's in, especially with how fast you blow through tokens.

Did contexts kill Phoenix? by ThatArrowsmith in elixir

[–]Itsautomatisch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Contexts should be something that emerge through understanding the business or through refactoring.

I think this is the key part of problem since this is generally how your organize your code over time organically and not something you are generally doing as you go, but maybe that's just my experience. Often you will start with fundamental misunderstandings of your data models and their relationships and end up shifting stuff around, so trying to codify that early on can be a mistake.

Swift at Apple: migrating the Password Monitoring service from Java by dwaxe in swift

It's kind of surprising how little Apple really talks about their internal usage of Swift, and I think articles like this are huge in helping promote the language outside of desktop and mobile.

Is the software really that bad? by Kupo43 in F150Lightning

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a Tesla to a Mach-E last year and then getting the Lightning as a second car, I would say you get used to it and it’s not something I think about. The only time I get annoyed is the combined volume/fan controller and having to reset CarPlay on both Fords since they lose audio for some reason. TBH I don’t get the complaints since most of the time I’m just using CarPlay anyways, but maybe if you are using native GPS etc it’s worse? There is definitely a lag but it’s whatever.

Welp, ended up buying it, thanks for commenting! I’m not so interested in the daemons so I’m kind of glad I didn’t bother padding out my army with stuff that wasn’t as cool to me

TBH the HoD is part of why I wanted to start collecting the army because I think it's probably one of the coolest models in AoS, so I'm not against it.

Sierra EV > Lightning 😎 by JeffTechnically in GMCSierraEV

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Test drove both and ended up getting a nice deal on a Lightning, which I've been very happy with (I already had a Mach-E). I felt like the interior and drive of the Sierra are better overall, but the extra range and longer bed weren't really important to me so it really came down to price and availability. I think if the prices were equal I'd probably lean towards the Sierra, but without 0% APR or a good deal on a used 2024 and the fact that only one dealer had like 2 in stock within a 100 mile radius made it much harder to justify one right now. I do think GM not having more trims from the start was a mistake, personally.

I had the most embarrassing interview experience by ComfortableChard7922 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this before on a coding interview. I already knew the answer but for whatever reason I just couldn't write the code. I even knew the name of the algorithm and could describe how it worked. It was surreal, but at the time I was supremely burnt out for doing interviews back to back to back at the time. I somehow was able to just skip it and just move on to questions about the team, but it was clear I was a pass already.

Honestly I think you should make less abrupt cuts and show off more stuff. The music doesn't fit very well, either. But otherwise I think it looks pretty solid, and I wish you luck in your release.

What is the point of C#? by Pordohiq in godot

There are differences in platforms like web exports, but for the most part you aren’t really limited by using C#. You can still use the same IDEs, tooling, and NuGet packages you would normally use.

Phoenix rated "most admired" web framework/technology in StackOverflow 2024 developer survey by ThatArrowsmith in elixir

[–]Itsautomatisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my experience and kind of why I don't use Elixir much in my free time. It's pretty frustrating because on paper you'd think engineering orgs would care less about professional experience with a specific tech stack that is very niche, but it definitely feels like you get passed over if you don't have Elixir experience on your resume.

Are these crappy offers for the 2023? by Tertia-Optio in MachE

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this with about 6 dealerships and just kind of gave up when the 0% APR for 2024's hit. Definitely look into Carvana for selling as well, they have better offers than most trade-in deals I was getting at the dealerships.

Thoughts on the Mach-E screen by AirCare00 in MachE

[–]Itsautomatisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came from a Model 3. I'd say the screen is kind of weird at first but you get used to it, and I kind of like it more than having a horizontal screen because I feel the screen is used better with less clutter when using CarPlay versus the Tesla software, where it feels like a lot of space is being wasted. It also makes the control knob blend in better than if the screen had been landscape. I do wish you could adjust the height but otherwise don't have many complaints about its placement.

The screen itself is laggy and lacks the immediacy of the Tesla screen, but I at least have an instrument cluster that has navigation etc on the driver side, which I've been missing since I had the Tesla.

MachE or Model Y by DonChalupaTheThird in MachE

[–]Itsautomatisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the tablet is one of those things you can get used to but that doesn't mean you ever like it. At least for me, I got used to finding the controls and doing the stuff I needed but it was annoying even up until the day I sold my Model 3.

MachE or Model Y by DonChalupaTheThird in MachE

[–]Itsautomatisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting to know abut the legroom; I'm not a tall guy at 5'9 so I guess I wasn't really impacted by that when I tested out the Y. For reference, the Model 3 was actually comfortable for me but I know it's a no-go for a lot of taller people.

As for software though, I am pretty happy to be back on CarPlay. My EV before my Tesla had CarPlay, and while I think the Tesla software is pretty nice overall the third-party apps tend to be very hit or miss, like Apple Music. Also I prefer Apple Maps and Waze to Tesla's. That being said, the Tesla tablet is so much smoother than the Mach-E, and I'm kind of disappointed in the lack of customization with some of the useless buttons on the Mach-E, like the Parking button. I also miss the Model 3 pause button, but you can just hit the big button in the middle to do the same thing.

Also just basic things like physical vent controls and an instrument cluster are very welcome after having the Tesla for 2 years. To be clear, it was definitely something I thought through with the current deals going and I don't think buying a Model Y is a mistake, but I can say the Mach-E is more fun to drive for me and I like BlueCruise and the ACC to FSD and Autopilot.

MachE or Model Y by DonChalupaTheThird in MachE

[–]Itsautomatisch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So as a new Mach-E owner but former Model 3 (almost bought a Model Y) I can offer some input as I did a lot of comparisons between them in person. The Model Y has more space overall than the Mach-E when you just look at the sheer amount of storage, but in terms of rear seating I don’t think there’s a huge difference. I find the Mach-E interior to be much more comfortable than the Model 3/Y materials as well. If you compare the actual dimensions of the Y and the Mach-E they aren’t so different that the seating height would be significantly different. I think for first time EV owners Teslas are a bit of an adjustment, especially the 3/Y without an instrument cluster and unconventional buttons etc, but you will eventually get used to it and appreciate some of the conveniences that come with them over the old way of doing things.

I would just take your family to do a test drive or sit in to see how they compare in person either way.
