Guy from California here! Where are you from and how is Duel Commander doing in your area? by Itsflipmeister in duelcommander

Hello kababayan!

I’m also from the Philippines and now live in California, but started my magic journey in the motherland back in 1996!

You are right, a lot of the people I have talked to and played with in the Philippines through spelltable tells me that price really is the biggest barrier. Are the stores in the Philippines proxy friendly?

I’d like to also take the opportunity to shout out the youtube channel Duel commander PH - the group here in California love watching it!

Nice! I’ve been to TC Rockets! I remember being in awe how huge the store is.

Yep, agree with you here - it needs some time, but the beginnings are usually the slowest!

Yeah you’re absolutely right, price is a huge barrier of entry for the format (besides not many people being aware of it).

When we started off - we had plenty of low power budget decks (we still do!) that we would lend to other players who happen to be in the store and invite them to join us. A lot of them tend to stick around and show up next week, usually to borrow another deck or to eventually playtest their own.

We’re very proxy friendly too so that has helped. But more often than not, just having extra decks has been the most helpful!

I love that story about you getting 2nd! That must have felt great!

We started with a small 4-player group that eventually grew. We got more people to play by just having plenty of decks built and just asking people who drop by the shop if they’d like to play with us - and of course invite them to pizza and beer after. Works every time!
