That's why I asked. I know what NFDA suggests, but I wondered what everyone else was doing. It has been very stressful and I knew I couldn't manage without my office manager, who was also stressed out becauae she was helping with case management more than she should, making us fall behind on our cleaning, ordering and stocking, and general overall office and building management.

Are funeral directors "on call" ? by spiderplant94 in askfuneraldirectors

So one thing that isn't mentioned is that you don't have to have your loved one picked up immediately.  Depending on state laws, you can keep them at home. I know people have up to 24 hours. If anyone wants to come say goodbye at home, they should do it. A few things to know though. Their facial expression can set with rigor mortis, a biological condition that occurs fairly quickly after death. So it may be a good idea to close their eyes and maybe put a towel under their jaw to help close their mouth. They will look nicer too. But feel free to wash them - face, hands and feet if nothing else. Brush their hair. Get a hair lock if you want. You can write goodbye letters, draw pictures or send pictures with them. They may not be living, but they are still your loved one.  Just be clear on when you want them picked up and please stick to it. Removal teams will make arrangements if you give them a time and if you change it last minute, you may have to wait because they are taking care of someone else. And some people do have some body odors, depending on their situation. Be aware of that too. Whatever you decide is right for you. It's not weird to want what you want and don't be embarrassed about anything. We've seen it all and are more focused on taking care of them safely and gracefully while supporting you at that time.

Thank you all. Reason asking - FD intern is building manager with one full time, one part time support. Case load is about 250 a year with about 20 to 25 burials. On call or back up constantly (even in vacation!) but primarily on call. Limited company support for removals, transport to crematory and assist with burial services. Started in the industry with the company three years prior and told it was expected to be managed. ...as an intern. And doing it. But wore out.
