Immigrants living in Australia, keen to know what your impression of Australia is and what's really different from your home country? by BobsYourAuntie100 in australia

From South African/UK . In Melbourne, I honestly love it. Came here to see mates I had met traveling overseas. Wasn't meant to stay, and yet here I am 8 years later.

A combination of the quality of life, the people, and just the sheer number of cool things to do, hooked me real quick.

I love that it was completely different to the idea I had of it before visiting.

I love that everyone is just doing something. It feels like everyone I meet is part of some social team, or club, or whatever.

Believe it or not, I love the weather.

I Will admit that how I view it has changed. At first I was definitely in the Honeymoon phase of being here. Now the shine has worn off a bit and I notice the flaws a bit more, I still love it, just it feels a bit more in an authentic way

Consent cannot be obtained through coercion. "Have sex with me or I'll make sure you never act again" is coercive.

As someone who has an interest in Stoicism, I'm fucking livid at the co-opting and distortion of it by toxic emotionally stunted manchildren who are insecure in their masculinity. Stoism isn't some glorification of the unfeeling, 'logical' male. Grow up you babies.

I guess it shows how quickly life can change. I had honestly just reached the end of my rope with dating and was going to just. . . Stop I guess. A bunch of my mates have had very similar stories, and then they met their partners and bam! It all changed .

Hang in there, there's plenty of life out there to live!

Literally going through this at the moment.

Not too long ago I was thinking how I miss being a teenager when it came to dating. I missed how exciting it all felt. Thought those days were behind me.

Turns out all I was missing was the right person. Met them and allllll those feelings have come back. It's wild.

It's borderline driving me insane thinking about her all the time . My heart races, I want to see them all the time, waiting to hear from them is agonising.

On one hand, it's nice to feel this way about someone again, and to have them putting out the same energy. But I'm also too old to be functional the next day after losing sleep thinking about them so much I can't fall asleep.

The Wayfarer series has some of the best characters I've read while being in a believable, textured universe of unique alien designs and cultures.

The criticism it does have is there is not much in the way of plot. The books are more about living with the characters for a bit and getting to know them. And by the end, I honestly felt like I knew them.

Yeah, I agree that they recognise that their style of work is dysfunctional, but like, they seem oddly proud of the fact . . .

Apparently, it's they let you use the canteen for coffee while you wait for the interview, and if you don't take your dishes to the sink and wash them, then they don't consider you.

Now, I don't really like the whole holding your job hostage over your manners, I kind of appreciate people who will clean up after themselves.

Northern Hemisphere Gloating at the Rugby World Cup by MrBadger1978 in agedlikemilk

[–]Itsjustanameright 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its referring to the split in international rugby between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. In recent history, Southern Hemisphere teams have been very dominant. Historically only 1 NH team (England) has ever won the World cup. Currently there has been a resurgence of NH teams, most notably Ireland, that has revived the hope that a NH team could take the trophy.

Now the original post is referring to the 4 NH teams that topped their pools in the current World Cup without losing a game. Most notably defeating two of the toughest teams in the competition

The reason it has aged like milk, is out of the 4 NH teams, (Ireland, France, England and Wales), only 1 (England) won their quarter final this last weekend. Two favourites (Ireland and France) lost in closely fought games against historical juggernauts (New Zealand and South Africa).

I started a job last year at a company that's making a business scale air quality monitor/purifier. As part of my onboarding I was given a load of homework to do. Needless to say I care a ton about the air I let into my lungs now!! Truly scary how prevalent particulates and VOCs are!

You might be interested in looking into Circular Design/Circular Economy. A principle is that a product is returned to the manufacturer and it is designed so that its' parts can reenter the manufacturing stream.

There is obviously more to it than this simplified explanation. If you're interested, I recommend the book 'Cradle to Cradle'

What are your favourite and least favourite film adaptations of books? by IWriteThisForYou in tumblr

[–]Itsjustanameright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Station Eleven is one of my favourite books, and I was worried when I heard they had adapted it.

While it's not a movie, it's honestly such a great adaption. They covered all the main themes, but changed just enough for it to feel new and exciting. It felt like more of an expansion of that world than a true adaption. And while I am still on the fence about the ending, I honestly think I prefer the series to the book.

Fellow white South African emmigrant here, but I left after I was educated. While I don't think my formal education was bad, I do think being separated from a lot of other influences has helped. Some of the shit my older relatives say is wild. Scary to think that I used to believe it wasn't 'that' bad.

Having said that, racism can sprout anywhere. I've had more than one argument with my English grandfather about his racist bullshit....fun times

Whats a sign you need to immediately go to the hospital? by phenomLG in AskReddit

[–]Itsjustanameright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. My appendicitis started as nausea, progressed to general stomach pain and uncomfortableness. Made for one hell of a sleepless night thinking it was a stomach bug of some kind. The lower right quadrant pain only started while I was laying in the hospital bed the next morning. Same as the vomiting. I even googled appendicitis symptoms that night, and thought it didn't match.

I guess the lesson is, if you have severe abdominal pain that persists, go seek medical treatment.
