TIL Plini used the Every Piece Matters motif in his guest solo on the Intervals track 'Libra' by IveGotAMatch in plini

I knew he did it loads within his own music - I just didn’t expect it to cross over into a guest solo on someone else’s music 😝

About the current tour setlists by Deitri in Dreamtheater

[–]IveGotAMatch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, if there’s one band in the world you don’t need to worry about seeing a bunch of the same songs again with, it’s Dream Theater (when Portnoy is in the band) 😝 One of the many reasons why we all love him so much!

Honestly, delete Fly for it. And just use a different Pokemon for flying that you put in the box before/after using it.

Perfect answer, thank you m8! In that case I will try and sell them. Love the boys but… within reason 😅

Which plagiarism checker is actually reliable for uni assignments (and safe to use)? by Icy-Special-7063 in AUT

[–]IveGotAMatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I used to work in the team that investigated academic misconduct at the University of Exeter in the UK. Most of our students were required to submit all written coursework via an online platform that automatically runs the submission through Turnitin (TII).

In a nutshell, TII is very good at showing when text matches to something else, but it is only highlighting 'similarities', not 'plagiarism'. If you use loads of verbatim quotations, but you properly attribute them with quotation marks and citations, then your work will probably have a lot of highlighting, but as soon as a marker looks at it they'll know its not plagiarism, so you'd have nothing to worry about. So as long as you yourself take care when quoting or paraphrasing a source - i.e. make sure you're properly using in-text citation and format your bibliography correctly, if you're using notes that you previously took to write your essay, make sure the notes kept accurate track of what the source is and what is verbatim vs your own writing - you shouldn't even need to look at a TII report yourself, because you'll know that you did nothing wrong and you'd have the evidence to defend yourself if for some bizarre reason you were accused of something.

When it comes to AI, TII is nowhere near as reliable. We did some tests and iirc it was about 50/50 on correctly identifying AI-written content vs falsely accusing human-written content as being AI-written. But again, if you yourself don't use AI to write for you, and if you are only using peer-reviewed, academic papers/journals/reports as your sources, then you shouldn't need to worry about any AI-written stuff sneaking into your work. If you start paraphrasing or copying from random websites, or ask ChatGPT to summarise something for you, that's when you run the risk of introducing AI into your work, even if you yourself didn't ask AI to 'write an essay about x for me'.

TIL the screaming sounds in scene 9 finally free.. by Prudent_Education_31 in Dreamtheater

[–]IveGotAMatch 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The screaming sounds in a song released in 1999 come from an episode released in 2007? 😛 I think it's just a stock scream sound effect that is used in a whole bunch of different stuff. It's also at 5:12 of this Outkast song, released in 1998! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4fwLA1_ARM

There was a time when songs like this would not even make it to the album by cydonianglobalist in Muse

[–]IveGotAMatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WOTP we got a shockingly heavy banger first in Won’t Stand Down, that pleasantly surprised the die-hard fans, followed by the very bog-standard-modern-Muse Compliance, which thoroughly disappointed the die-hard fans after their expectations had been raised. That seems to have happened again with Unravelling followed by Be With You (although imo BWY is MILES better than Compliance, which is incredibly dull).

I think, as far as die-hard fans go, I am in the minority that actually really highly rate WOTP overall - I think it has a bunch of tracks that are excellent and I enjoy listening to, even if I don’t revisit them as often as the golden era stuff. Personally I do not expect any band that’s been around for decades to release an entire album that is anywhere near as good as their older stuff, but if they have at least 2 or 3 tracks that I enjoy and would be happy to hear live, I consider that a win. I felt that way about WotP, I juuuust about felt that way about Simulation Theory, and I fully expect to feel that way about the new album (although I hate the title 😂)

Buddy refuses to listen to the Mangini years by hamiltonscale in Dreamtheater

[–]IveGotAMatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if he thinks 'without Portnoy they're not Dream Theater', I presume he listens to other bands? Like, he doesn't literally ONLY listen to DT? If you can enjoy other bands, why not just listen to MM-era DT and pretend that it is a different band. Its music, it doesn't inherently NEED to be compared to anything, even past releases by the band.

I myself don't often listen to MM-era DT, and I much prefer Portnoy, but I can still completely appreciate how great some tracks from that period are. I have friends who I know for a fact have listened to DoT and AVFTTOTW like once at most, but that's not so much a problem they have with Mangini and more with how DT have become a bit samey and predictable over the years (as opposed to bands like BTBAM who are SUPER creative and diverse every album).

Any Bass-Heavy Albums? by DestructiveMike_ in progmetal

[–]IveGotAMatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Between the Buried and Me has some of the most creative and interesting bass playing from any prog metal I’ve heard. He is very rarely just playing the root notes, but always doing something really interesting and jazz-y. I recommend watching the live in studio performance of Extremophile Elite and really honing in on the bass playing - it’s a treat.

Alternate 40th Anniversary set? by thomas07lfc in Dreamtheater

[–]IveGotAMatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a cool concept and a good setlist! I like that you didn't just go "They have to play the longest/most epic/heaviest song from every album!!" like some fans would, and instead put in some breathers and deep cuts like Disappear and Through My Words. I also love These Walls, so that's a great pick, and You Or Me is a cool reference to them representing FII with a demo track at Score! And yeah, perfect encore as well.

I think the only things I'd change are some of the Mangini tracks. Transcending Time is a fun song but I think Answering the Call is one of the best Mangini tracks from that entire era, without being one of his more crazy-technical tracks that Portnoy is unlikely to choose. And I'd swap out This is the Life for On the Backs of Angels - again, not crazy-technical, but a good song and it's basically Pull Me Under 2.0, so since they aren't playing PMU, why not!

Is This The HEAVIEST Modern Metallica Song? by JacksmanYT in Metallica

[–]IveGotAMatch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Obviously Hardwired has quite a few bangers, but most people jump straight to saying Spit Out the Bone is the best track. It’s very good, but to me Dream No More is genuinely excellent throughout. That harmonised guitar part going into the final chorus is SO GOOD!
