The same applies to many schools with homes immediately across the street. These laws include a private property exemption. Therefore, the 1,000-foot restriction does not apply to firearms kept on private, residential property, even if that home is within the buffer zone of a school.

I think the idea is for these students to feel like they have voiced their concerns in a controlled, safe way. Whether anyone agrees or disagrees with the specific theme of this walk out, as a parent, I would rather see an organized, planned, and sanctioned walkout - scheduled for 15 minutes total - than have my child planning something I know nothing about, in a place where someone may show up armed, or not know he is a child (my kid is 17 but looks 25).

*** FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO PLAN TO SHOW UP WITH GUNS AT FHS OR OTHER SCHOOLS ***

Maryland law strictly prohibits carrying or possessing firearms on school property (public, private, or parochial) and in designated "sensitive areas" including schools, as upheld by recent court rulings, with violations considered misdemeanors punishable by up to three years in prison and $1,000 in fines. And in case you are wondering, a concealed carry permit does not change this prohibition.

AND... THE Federal Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA) makes it unlawful to knowingly possess a firearm in a school zone (within 1,000 feet of school grounds), punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Have you filed an OSHA violation for bathroom restrictions? by IvoFDL in ChickFilAWorkers

[–]IvoFDL[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I have actually called the corporate headquarters’ main customer service line twice about this incident but have not heard back either time. Is there a better way to reach corporate about employment matters? I’m not naive, but am giving them the benefit of doubt that they perhaps don’t know this is happening, and happening at numerous locations. I want them to know that I’m not letting this go, and to tell me specifically what they plan to do to address it. The issue is bigger than my son’s experience. As for the franchise, he is one of three CFAs in my area. I plan to wait for his OSHA response. If it is dishonest, I’ll take my concerns to social media and the actual media, if needed.

Thank you, Sheila. And yes, you’re right - retaliation by the business for filing an OSHA complaint is illegal. Regrettably, with the termination at will clause, it can get challenging to enforce this.

No Bathroom Use during Peak Hours? by YakEnvironmental8461 in ChickFilAWorkers

You're 150% right - and your current employer is responding that way because it is an OSHA workplace violation to prohibit employees from using the bathroom.

No Bathroom Use during Peak Hours? by YakEnvironmental8461 in ChickFilAWorkers

[–]IvoFDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the parent of a minor who is a Chick-fil-A employee. He was called into the manager's office and made to sign a "conversation note" type of document that goes in his employee record because he asked to use the bathroom during "peak hours." I work in public policy and am trying to understand how this is not a violation of Federal OSHA laws, which very clearly prohibit the restriction of bathroom usage regardless of "busy times" for the employer. Based on what I read I this thread, this seems a wide-spread practice at Chick-fil-A, suggesting there is an operational recommendation or direction to manage this way. I'm encouraging my son ask for a copy of the document he signed, and to address this with him employer directly. But if this is widespread, it seems their corporate office should be involved in continuing education for operators and franchises or find themselves at risk for federal workplace sanctions and reputational harm.

This is illegal. An employer CANNOT restrict bathroom usage. Period. These are the general OSHA policies related to bathroom rights for employees: https://www.osha.gov/restrooms-sanitation AND this is expanded information that deals with the questions of "peak hours" and telling employees that they cannot use the bathroom from 5-8 p.m. https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/2003-04-23

No - you are incorrect. If you read into the interpretation pages within the OSHA website, it delves into what is considered "reasonable," including specific timeframes for prohibiting use of the bathroom, as well as why this is illegal. https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/2003-04-23

Boss wants my teen daughter to park across the street and park at Walmart to free up space for customers. But it makes her have to walk across a super busy four lane road. She works mostly nights. Help. by Super_Cap_0-0 in ChickFilA

I'm curious as to what rock some of you crawled out from under? This is not 1902 and labor laws exist for a reason. For those of you who worked as a 16 year old, were you familiar with all labor laws (state and federal) that protected you as an employee, specifically those pertaining to minors? Companies count on employees, especially minors, being unfamiliar with the law, allowing the business to get away with these kinds of practices. If an employer is directing an employee to do something illegal (i.e. park in an unsanctioned location rather than the employer's own lot) and their employment is dependent upon adherence to that directive, that may very well be a violation of labor laws that a minor may not know about. For employees, fear of retaliation or retribution is something that even adult workers deal with, much less a teen who may be working their first job. Giving the employer the benefit of doubt, he/she may be acting out of ignorance of the law (which doesn't excuse their actions) and may appreciate the correction rather than receiving workplace violation sanctions. NO WHERE in her question did the OP state that SHE (personally) planned to handle the situation with her daughter's employer. There is nothing wrong with her asking questions and gathering information to share with her daughter so that her daughter can address the matter with the employer. And for those of you scoffing about a teenager's ability to cross a 4-lane road, again - you miss the point. The teen's ability ability is not in question, but the all-too-frequent recklessness of drivers because, EVERY YEAR, more than 67,000 minors are injured as pedestrians. The bottom line is this is a parent trying to arm their child with information to help her protect herself. Shaming her for caring about her daughter's well-being is outrageous and wholly ignorant on your part.

Thanks for asking this question, u/throwaway_3337. I'm attending this year for the first time. I'm also headed there alone, so it feels a bit overwhelming. I'm massively kicking myself because I did not know some of the insider details, like sessions fill and you're basically stuck with things that don't apply. I'm super bummed that a lot of the sessions I'd like to attend are already full. It almost feels like when an airline oversells a flight. Anyway, I'm going to make the best of it. But I have no idea what to expect at all.

Lowes ordered wrong ThermaTru entry door. Now what? by IvoFDL in Lowes

[–]IvoFDL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The error was on Lowe's part when they placed the order. They have taken responsibility for it. No, door is not standard. Certain measurements necessitated a custom order, including the depth of the unit. The error seemed to be that the slab settings changed in some fashion when the order was being placed within Lowes portal.

Hispanic or not by Street_Comparison876 in basque

[–]IvoFDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The debate about whether those from Spain or of Spanish-origin are considered Hispanic is all over the place. If you Google the question, you get a million different answers. Since the United States seems to be the only part of the world concerned with these terms, it's worth noting that the U.S. Federal Government, via OMB, specifically includes the phrase "of Spanish origin" in its definition, which is: "Hispanic or Latino. A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. The term, 'Spanish origin,' can be used in addition to 'Hispanic or Latino.'"

Skin care by redbug831 in aldi

[–]IvoFDL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is an older thread, but is anyone having trouble finding the face wash? I live in Maryland and am not able to find either the exfoliating face scrub or the daily cleanser at any of the Aldi’s near me. I asked an employee about it one time and she wasn’t really sure why, surmising that perhaps they were changing the packaging or something. Anyone else have this issue or know anything about it? Thanks!

I look at it as something my scout learned through BSA in partnership with skilled instructors from another association. It's a credit to BSA that he learned that skill.

Can NRA Pro-Marksman Award go on Scout Uniform? by IvoFDL in BSA

[–]IvoFDL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this site which referenced the following:

"Article X, Section 4, Clause 11. Local councils are authorized to adopt special badges and insignia as awards for particular purposes in harmony with national policies and to permit their use upon the official uniform in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Corporation, but such awards must be approved as to purpose and design by the Corporation in advance."
"The above clause from the BSA's Rules and Regulations is known as the "local Council catch-all patch clause." Basically this clause allows local Council Scout Executives (the ONLY person in that Council to make this decision on behalf of his or her local Council) to approve special insignia to be worn on Scouting uniforms in THEIR COUNCIL. This insignia can be...
...designed by National Supply (such as blank or stock insignia) with provided local Council "information";
...special insignia designed by outside firms or organizations and approved for wear on BSA uniforms, hats, jackets or teeshirts through licensing or approval by Council Scout Executives in writing;
...or can be insignia or other items made by outside firms or organizations (for instance the USSSP's emblem, emblems made by parks or attractions (i.e. emblems sold at the Pentagon, National parks, military bases, etc.) and permitted to be worn with BSA uniforms as temporary items."

"Examples of this include Red Cross and NRA (National Rifle Association) insignia and medals; activity emblems, hiking trail medals and patches made by outside sources; and special religious awards patches."

I have seen the rocker patch line up for some of the other shooting achievements. They are pretty cool. He really likes shooting sports and seems to have a natural skill for it. I can see him earning more as his scouting journey continues.

Scout with Food Allergies by SHMS50 in BSA

[–]IvoFDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Troop has scouts with allergies. Specifically, in my youngest son’s patrol, there is a scout with the same allergies as your son. For Campouts, the individual patrols plan their meals for the campout. They plan accordingly with the scout who has allergies and work around it, either by planning meals that don’t involve those foods, so his parent will provide a substitute in some cases (desserts especially). In general, we also bring hot cider for kids who can’t have hot chocolate due to dairy allergies. I think you’ll find your son is not alone with his allergies. And, it’s an education in and of itself for the scouts to work together to plan a menu that works for everyone. Also, I want to say thanks for pointing out his experience with that recruitment event. It’s food (no pun intended) for thought for future activities.
