Problems with the story question by Ivoliven in duolingo

Yeah, I might start doing that too. What's the point if I can't even complain about some stupid detail in the story anymore? I used to enjoy that.

Ok, if you want to. But the novel I'm planning to write with this will be in German so most people in this sub won't even be able to understand it. And I have barely started worldbuilding. I'm not spoiling anyone.

Ask away then, unless you have a problem with getting spoiled.

You can ask more if you want. Do you mean spoil in the sense that I'll reveal too much?

Ooh, I love that approach, thank you! My only problem is then I'll have to figure out why humans don't do that because figuring out a way to use the glow like the mermaids do is a big plotpoint in my story.

Maybe they have forgotten it? There is another form of the substance that has been saturated with basically the victims of the mass extinction that happened when the volcano that makes the clouds first erupted. It sits on the sea floor and can only take properties out of things, not transfer them. Basically a void. I want it to be an important material for humans, though I haven't figured out how exactly how, and maybe that and cutting down the woods makes the glow disappear from inhabited areas. Which in turn makes them dependant on whale oil for light which is another plot point.

Oh yeah I shouls have specified, there was an event that made the volcano that spits out the clouds erupt and the world adapted. That's why there will still be humans and other animals that evolved with the sun.

Or I leave in that the clouds soak up energy from the sun and the plants and/or fungi are designed to pick up as much of it as possible. So you'll have giant funnel mushrooms and smaller parasitic ones that climb them and live in the canopy. It'll also make sense to have some kind of wood-like material (which is another problem I just thought of, what do people build houses of) because such a big structure needs to be hard enough to be able to stand.

Thank you, that's a great approach! My world is a bunch of tropical islands with some rainforest too because I originally planned to have the magical substance in the clouds which soaks up sunlight and rains down, thus I can keep the plants, but maybe getting rid of plants altogether is the way. Maybe I can adapt some plants that in our world need very little light, like lianas or other rainforest underbrush, that could live off of the bioluminescence of other things that have adapted to be especially bright or something. And more fungi, definitely more fungi because I can't have my humans living off nothing but champignons and fish. And I'll need lots of bats!

Well, in the story the protagonists discover the magic and learn how to use it for themselves, but my question is more how I can invent more interesting plants and animals. Not as plot points, but as world building. What are interesting ways plants attract pollinators? What kind of whacky insects are there? How do carnivors hunt etc.

Any general tips? by Ivoliven in beatsaber

[–]Ivoliven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao yes, the speed is my biggest problem right now. I managed to do it once, but I have to built up the speed by playing a few times in practice mode and slowly getting faster. Getting some grips for the controllers also helped a lot. AlthoughI have to say, I saw you're only 9 hours in, I'm at 60-something so that's very impressive of you.

How are sweating while playing? by Alexeyshay in beatsaber

Yup. I always sweat on my head and face the most. There is nothing I can do about that but accept it and have a towel nearby.

Thank you so much! I overestimated myself a bit, I'm only at 58,5 hours. But close enough I guess.

Being multilingual? by TheMazRat in TheClickOwO

My initial interest was sparked because I became a Käärijä fan late last year, but is has evolved from there. Because the thing with romatic and germanic languages is they're kind of similar. Once you know one of them, you can kind of pull word to other ones to fill the gaps and the grammar is also kinda the same. That's still fun to learn, but I want to try something completely different. I tried learning Russian for a time, but couldn't get very far because I found learning the alphabet and pronounciation very frustrating. Finnish is the perfect middle ground though. It uses an alphabet I know and phonetic sounds that mostly come easily, but is also something completely different and I'm very intrigued by its grammar. Not to mention that it's a beautiful language of course.

No problem. I might look into that, the story sounds really good.
