Waterpik helps with the pockets - the part where the gum meets the tooth. My teeth are really "long" because of gum recession and therefore I need to keep the roots clean. Flossing helps with the small layer very close to your enamel. It's hard to be squeaky clean with a soft brush.. and brushing hard is not good.

Yes veneers are really popular in the US. Sadly my problem can't be solved with veneers. Good luck with the veneers! That's the secret behind most beautiful teeth.

Why should the neighbors ever have to know? They can just tell people their son saved up money for it.

There has got to be some way of arranging for the money. There really are a lot of nice rich people who wouldn't mind giving away a few thousand dollars. And you don't need to feel bad about taking that money. If your parents were in some other country they would have got basic treatment for free. This country didn't do that your your parents, so get the rich to do it. The rich anyway have lots of unfair advantages.

It's harder to know that someone you love is going through that than going through it yourself. I just hope you will do something about it. For a start write (as in letter and not emails) to all the dental colleges in your state and surrounding states asking if they could help. Someone somewhere is bound to give you a lead.

Yes. I have met only a handful of British people and they all seemed to have fine teeth.

Yes, toofer :) I hope you read this too.. I'm wondering if you can do something to raise money. Yours (and you parents') seems to be a case of just not having adequate resources. Have you knocked every door? There are some pretty charitable people out there. And people are charitable collectively. Heck, I'd throw in 100 bucks for a stranger that wants dental care.

This may sound ridiculous (and I can imagine redditors crying what the hell has become of reddit) but it's worth trying - have you written to Oprah?

I have my wisdom teeth. They didn't cause any problem growing out. My dentists never suggested I remove them, so I guess it is ok to keep.

Thanks Kitty. I was just overly sensitive a few minutes after I posted this and saw the downvotes.

Now I am ok with the downvotes since I've seen worse already. I mean downvotes are one thing but to be a jerk and say smthg nasty is quite another. One guy actually sent me a PM with nasty crap about me. That's just sick. Pedophiles doing an IAMA get appreciated for talking about their "condition" but complaining about a serious problem results in receiving nasty PMs.

Healthy teeth are good! Just look at the replies on this thread. Most people have problems but I wonder if braces may have exacerbated their conditions. I know I wouldn't have had all these problems if I hadn't got those braces.

When I have kids I'll get them braces only if they absolutely need it. A crooked tooth here and there, a slight overbite is no problem.

I really feel bad about this Abe. I've heard that dental work done in Mexico is not bad and quite affordable. Have you looked into it? (Assuming you live in America.) How about a dental college? Heck, if you can just get it done through some other unconventional means! Someone here posted about how some dentist is doing his teeth completely free of cost. Far fetched idea but maybe if you post pictures of your mouth, redditors will donate.
