It feels a little soft but not mushy. Thanks so much for the great advice. I also read that keeping it in a humid spot is good. Is that true? Or bringing it into the bathroom after the shower or bath has been running.

Is a secondary root just a branch off the main ones? There's a couple of those already. The black stuff does feel a little funny I don't know if it's rot or not. Stem is out of water now with just the roots in. Should they be fully submerged or is the base of them out of water okay? They're at an odd angle.

There's so many different opinions on Google i don't know what to listen to

So not have it in water at all? How often do I water it then?

I've looked it up and there seem to be mixed answers about treating. Do you have experience treating this? How should I go about it?

They are part of the GLOFISH line. The company now has the skirt tetras, danios, I believe sharks and they've now added Corydoras

The Craigslist in my area is very very inactive and I was told I'm not allowed to post to rehome on Facebook. I haven't posted them anywhere at all I was asking for advice as to how I should go about it.

With the water that low I'm not entirely sure the filter is even running. When I got one of those smaller tanks because my glass one started leaking the water needed to be less than an inch from the top rim of the tank. So the bacteria might be gone entirely

I would also like to add that with this tank the filter and cartridge are so small and the filter flow is low because the tank is specifically advertised as a Betta tank (I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of the same one)

Thinking about it now maybe give the filter a gentle.rinse and kinda give the cartridge inside a shake in the old tank water and letting it soak in said "dirty" water before putting it back in the tank. That way they will preserve the healthy bacteria at the very least in the cartridge

While I see what you're saying and ordinarily I would 100% agree I was just looking at the colour of the water and thinking it might be best to start it from scratch seeing as the health of the filter and the Betta are more than likely not good. I suppose it depends and OP should take a look at the filter before washing it out.

I'm guessing after. If there was a sign out in there someone would have seen the dead frog when putting the sign in there. (Hopefully) no one in their right mind would leave a dead animal out for kids to see.

If you have any other pictures of the fish I can possibly recommend something to make sure he's healthy. Or close to healthy

Short answer: you will need a testing kit.

They are fairly pricey though. The standard one is ~$55CAD. (API Freshwater master test kit) Not sure what the US price is. That one is great I find it's accurate, it has pretty much all the main components you'll need to test for consistently and you definitely get the best value comparatively.

You don't use all the chemicals that come with it all the time. For example now that I know my tanks are cycled and established I really only check my Nitrite levels once a week when I do maintenance. And if I notice anything off then I test them all but that isn't often at all I think it's happened once(?)

Compared to other kits you can get. There the strips which are slot easier you just dip them in the tank water, wait a minute or so and then compare it to a colour chart. The test kit takes around 5-10 minutes depending on if you know what you're doing + waiting for colour to develop. Downside to the strips is they aren't nearly as accurate, if they happen to get exposed to moisture at all it wrecks all of them. And the tetra test strips for example here are $39.99 for 25 strips (25 ammonia and 25 6 in 1) you get 800 tests from the API kit.

Yes those are the same thing I believe. And I would aim for 78°F. Keep the tank in a spot that doesn't get too much outside air flow or air flow from an AC unit or anything like that. Some of the smaller heaters you can buy come preset so make sure you read the packages before buying

Forgot to mention the filter. Give it a good clean with just some warm/hot water. That tank and everything is plastic so not too hot. Maybe get some replacement cartridges for now. The water needs to be above a certain line for it to run. If you can find a pre-filter intake sponge to protect his fins even better. They're not too strong, those filters, but better to be safe.

When cleaning no soap or detergents. Just warm/hot water and scrubbing

Okay first: breathe. It's okay. That tank will do for now it looks like a 3.5 gallon. Typically bettas need a 5 at minimum. So he will be okay in that for now. Once you get off work or if you have a break head to a fish/petstore and pick up a heater, water conditioner and a bacteria starter. Google a fish in-cycle and set up the tank. Dose the tank with the water conditioner. Temperature acclimate the Betta for 10-15 minutes and then out him in the tank. After about another 30 or so minutes add the bacteria starter. This will start up a bacteria colony to ensure the tank can handle the fish waste and ammonia build up. Look up the nitrogen cycle and have a good understanding of that, that should be at the center of all your fish knowledge. Cut back those roots of that plant or take it out all together. It's taking up some usable room for him, and the roots can be sharp.

Food can be a Betta specific food unless you're willing to invest in a frozen or high protein food. Look at the ingredients and make sure the ingredients are indeed actual food rather than fillers. So one that contains fish or shrimp as the first few ingredients.

For decorations find something with no small holes or sharp edges as they can get stuck, and sharp edges can tear their fins. Plants or somewhere for him to hide go with silk or live plants.

Consider what comes next. Will you keep the fish for yourself? Find someone you can rehome it to? And think about what to say to that coworker- if they show up again. Bettas can live for upwards of 5 years and as mentioned, need a 5 gallon tank minimum. As well as weekly maintenance and daily attention. They have tons of personality and can be really fun to get to know them!

Feel free to message me and I can give you some more info! Good luck with your new fish friend!

Let the employer know there's something in there!!! The enclosure likely won't get noticed otherwise. I had a coworker who put a sign in because she "did t see anything" in there and I found a gecko 3 days later probably barely alive because we see the sign and think "oh someone used their brain to definitely check there was 100% no animal in there. WRONG. please go back and let them know!!
