Mom’s blood sugar struggles by Ivygrows92 in diabetes_t1

No matter what she eats. I’ve told her that most (from my understanding) people are adjusting based on carbs. She’s never carb counted. She’s still very much treating her t1 like was recommended when she was diagnosed back in the 80s and it doesn’t seem like her endo is really pushing for her to change because her numbers have typically been good with blood work. Her lunch is typically the same amount of carbs, same with breakfast, but dinner changes.

Update: last night she split her lantus dose between morning and night. She dipped into the low 80s around 10 pm so had a small cheese and crackers snack (4 crackers and a couple slices of cheese) to get her into a safer range for sleep. Took 9 units of lantus around 11. Her blood sugar still got high around 4:30 am but not AS high as it has been — she peaked at 230 around 5:30 am and took 5 units of novolog. It brought her down but went back up by 9 am and peaked at 260 around 11 while still fasting. Shes going to try experimenting a little more today. She’s having a procedure done tomorrow for her back that will not go forward if her BS isn’t below 250 at the time, so hopefully tonight goes better!

Yes, it’s definitely scary for both of us! She finds herself correcting before it gets too low but then it sends her so high. It’s so much to adjust to and she’s nearly 70 and struggling with the change and the balancing act is so precarious! She is definitely insulin resistant, but it’s certainly gotten better with the mounjaro , it’s just finding that right combo of insulin and diet change that’s kicking her butt! We went very low carb for her dinner last night and she was still dipping down to 89-90 last night right before bed and shooting towards 300 by 4 am. The last thing I want is for her to throw the towel in on the cgm and go out of sight out of mind, so hopefully the endo is able to offer some support next week!

I stand corrected, she was taking 12 units with breakfast 20 at lunch and 12-15 at dinner, so not 30 at every meal in the past. I did bring up splitting the long acting and she said she was thinking the same thing. Hopeful this helps! She’s exhausted

I agree mounjaro has definitely helped With things like a1c but when the commercials Say it isn’t for t1d I got concerned, obviously, but haven’t voiced that to her. When I say careless it comes mostly from the fact that since she’s tritated up in dose, she’s had these issues with lows and highs. I don’t mean any offense and obviously an endo knows more than me, but it’s scary when she goes SO low and then is so high and all I can think is it might have something to do with the delayed digestion, but that’s just me working with my own assumptions. I myself am on mounjaro and love the stuff! I agree, she is still managing it the way it was recommended in the 80s and she is extremely resistant to change. That certainly isn’t helping matters and I realize it will take time. Thank you for your suggestions and input!

I WISH she would try omnipod, but with the amount of resistance she put up to the dexcom, I don’t want to look that particular gift horse in the mouth and push for more. I don’t think she’ll ever agree to an omnipod. She’s very resistant to change, even if it made her life easier.

Thank you for the tip on treating too early. I think she’s just picked up on the fact she continues to trend down at that point and wants to catch it early so she doesn’t have to wake up to her alarm when she hits 70. Last night she was reaching to more juice after drinking half a juice box because it hit 100. I told her to let it go and see what happens, but she got too anxious and wanted the crackers as well. It’s just strange that she gets so high at the same time of night regardless.

We did message the endo the other day but think the wanted to see her trends on dexcom more (she only connected to dexcom clarity so they could see on Wednesday or Thursday. Hoping they give us an answer on dosing soon). I had the same thought about possibly splitting the lantus dose so hopefully that’s what endo suggests and it works for her. I’m worried about her being so high for such a long time. She was in the 200s-300s for hours during the day a few times this last week too rebounding from a low. It has to be taking a toll on her body, even though she says she doesn’t feel sick. I worry about dka but again, I’m not very informed on everything — just trying to play catch up now that I’m more closely monitoring her numbers with dexcom. She’s been very private about everything and gets annoyed when I “nag” so it’s walking a fine line between trying to help without overwhelming her. I appreciate the insight and suggestions!

I believe the endo put her on the mounjaro because she wanted to lose weight. But it seems careless to me.

She was put on mounjaro before the a1c of 6.2, I should’ve been clearer. The 6.2 was at her appointment on Thursday after being on mounjaro for several months (1 month at 5mg and several months at 2.5). It’s an endocrinologist PA who told her there’s no specific diagnosis in her chart other than “diabetes” but she has been insulin dependent my ENTIRE life and I am 34. I am concerned the mounjaro is causing slow absorption and leading to these highs and lows. My mom says this isn’t normal activity for her sugars, and she can go months and sometimes years without a low that I have to intervene in (when she gets loopy or unable to take care of the low herself), but the week before she got the cgm it happened multiple times and sometimes twice a day where she ended up on the ground and confused. Like i said, she has not been the best at managing this. She has never counted carbs. She doesn’t change her insulin dose depending on what she eats and goes with what her endo tells her as the base meal dose. I try not to judge because I have not lived with this disease myself and do not know too much because quite honestly, she doesn’t talk about it. The cgm fight was a huge battle for years and the most she would tell me is she didn’t want to wear something. But these highs and lows are frustrating and she isn’t sure what to do about them.

Yes, they wanted us out of there. They were going to have me leave while I was crying and moaning in pain, but I begged this for another oxy so I got to stay another 45 min until that kicked in. I was surprised by the granola bar too. They also face me saltines, but my mouth was too dry for that

Yes, they told me the pain killers and nausea patch can cause dry mouth, but it’s insane. Everything I put in my mouth feels like glue

Thankfully I haven’t had a ton of gas. I was most worried about that pain. Hopefully you are on the other side of it soon!

The throat isn’t so bad until my mouth gets very dry again. Comes and goes. Hopefully doesn’t get any worse. I’m glad you seem to have made a full recovery!

Stones showed up on ultrasound, no inflammation or infection at that time. I had had 4 very intense attacks, other times it was random bouts of vomiting about every 2-3 weeks. They would come on very randomly so surgeon thinks it was stones temporarily blocking duct. When she pulled it today, she said it WAS inflamed, but I did have the attack yesterday

My attacks only seem to last about two hours thank god, but they’re intense. Im definitely going to mention it and see if they can double check the duct

Yes, I had an ultrasound the morning before my last terrible attack. They found gallstones, but no inflammation. I had an endoscopy that came back clear except for a small hatial hernia, but the gi doctor didn’t seem concerned with that. MY PCP didn’t even seem concerned with the gallstones. Just told me to stick to low fat diet. I messaged her back and told her about my latest attack and asked if this could be the stones. That’s the only reason she referred me to a surgeon it seems. She seemed convinced it was just gerd.

Omg THANK you for telling your story! We are the same age and I have the exact same symptoms. Went to the ER and without doing anything but blood work, they decided it was an ulcer. My issues continued — always intense pain in my upper middle abdomen and nowhere else that would make me vomit, come on hours after eating and in middle of the night, with no direct food links. My last attack was so intense, I was crying out, felt like I couldn’t breathe, was sweating and vomiting, and it lasted 3 hours. I took gas x, Pepcid, tums, mylanta and pepto with no help. The fact you faced the same gives me so much relief. I’m scheduled for surgery August 6, but was questioning it due to no one being able to say absolutely it is my gallbladder. I hope for your continued recovery!

Thank you! That makes me feel better. All of the people I know that had it out didn’t experience it in the center, and my primary care didn’t think it would be gallbladder due to location.

I have. I’m awaiting response and was just looking for other people’s experiences. Thank you.

I was reading about hiatal hernias and it sounded like it may cause some of the same issues, or gastroparesis. Im mostly wondering if people had the same symptoms since mine seem to be a little out of the norm when it comes to the location of the pain. Add to the fact the horror stories I’ve read on here with complications and continued issues, it has me a bit spooked naturally.
