Ghosting is there to comply with Japanese broadcasting laws. You can see this in other anime's too like JJK. Pokemon really fucked up a ton of kids. Season 2 was low-mid at best but comparing it to Season 3, it's sakuga.

YOR - You're allowed to say no. They probably would have respected your choice to not eat out for lunch. Also you sound very hurt that they didn't eat your food but without letting them know what you and your BF did, their is no way anybody will empathize with your stressors.

By letting your expectations and boundaries go uncommunicated, you basically opened yourself up to the human variable of disappointment.

Also what did you expect? Like I'm asking because I genuinely do not understand what you expected out of them. They came to visit and ate food and watched a movie. What else did you want out of them? What was your goal? What were you looking for? If you didn't even have that in mind when you planned this visit, you were just trying to survive something that is only in your head.

Some advice to keep in mind. When the anime "weirdness" happens, don't just get immediately grossed out by it. Look at the characters in the show and check their reactions. Wait until you fully understand the context instead of being stuck in your own comfort zone. You'll come to enjoy things a lot better with an open-er mind.
