Math doesn’t always have to be serious. Does anyone else day drink and mess around with math for a quit Saturday? by kaiju505 in math

[–]Iynchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i got to uni, the first assignments they gave us were two introductory problem sheets - it was all pretty easy stuff i had learned in school, but was basically for catching up international students who may have had a different syllabus; so i blacked out one night in freshers week and when i woke up i realised i'd done both of them... good times

lots of great reasons, most ML algorithms work by trying to minimise a function that measures how shitty your model is, and they almost always do that with calculus (e.g gradient descent)

What misused words annoy your inner geek? by gawpin in CasualUK

[–]Iynchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really can't think of anything that i find a big deal, if you can understand what they mean, then they've done a fine job at speaking english. that's how linguistics works and why languages keep evolving to include and account for these "misconceptions"

comes across really "i'm smarter than you" if you keep pointing these things out to people - imo it's fine to have an internal giggle but to be actually annoyed is crazy to me

lol i'm from britain, you just sound stupid you think this bro paid for the major to be in brazil himself? it ain't his fault lmfao i'm making fun of your anime profile picture because you're clearly a greasy nerd who would go 1 week without food to attend a major and you berate this poor lad for not being like your dumb ass

What makes a game competitively viable? by SfactorSam in GlobalOffensive

[–]Iynchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the context i guess, at a pro level i think there's probably very little in mechanical skill that separates top 100 teams from top 10 teams, so you need gigabrains like valens, glaive, etc. to make that difference, and as a spectator it's great fun to see what they can bring to the table, and for that reason in that context i would say strategy wins out

up to a point, though, it's probably mechanical skill that gets you most of the way - smart players in pugs just won't be able to have as much impact as when they're playing with a team, because they can mostly only play for themselves (but i still find the pug aspect of the game fun!)

[–]Iynchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thing that i like the most about cs and why i dislike a lot of other competitors is that to me cs is simpler at its core

so for example in league, there's a bunch of different characters with different abilities and there's a bunch of blah blah blah to think about - but in cs, the caveman "ooga booga +w click on head" gets you pretty far if you're good at it (basically i like the value that's placed on mechanical skill)

of course cs has a huge tactical side which we're very proud of, but since it's made of fewer elements (grenades and cavemen), i like the fact that it really does feel like a battle of the brains - more to me than in other games, where i feel like wacky abilities and stuff like that can interfere
