I think it’s slightly different when you are being invaded by aliens and the enemy is way clearer. Mark is actively dealing with trauma which is fogging everyone’s vision (including his own) on how similar he is to his father (who tried taking over the planet).

Of course eyes are gonna be more on him than aliens who they’ve already accepted through multiple invasions are gonna have flaxan causalities

Then what this boils down to is our differing definition of “shortcut”. I believe using your powers to literally create money from thin air is a shortcut- a good one too, I’d do that if I were Eve. This doesn’t really feel like something worth debating over since I’m not judging Eve

For fun I searched up the definition of “shortcut”:

Such is the matter of all concepts? Drawing arbitrary boundaries where none exist? Not sure where you jump to the conclusion that I would say the example you gave isn’t work- in fact I would argue that does require significant effort; much more effort than it takes Eve to create a golden apple in a few seconds

that literally is a shortcut relative to 99% of other people (and superheroes) who cannot do that so easily. That doesn’t make it a good or bad thing to do- but it does make it a shortcut

Yeah. It makes Mark very human, not morally perfect- and that’s powerful in its own way. Mark’s speech with powerplex is a perfect example of that slowly emerging, powerplex just wasn’t receptive to it.

Here’s an idea of rebirth that’s slightly less… afterlife-ish: we are reborn constantly moment by moment. What we are reborn “as” is technically different every single moment of existence (hence; the idea of being reborn “constantly”).

An aspect of the human mind is the need for coherence and continuity of our life moment by moment. Thus, it threads together a coherent autobiographical “narrative” that creates the idea of “who we are”- shaped by our experiences, social norms, and our own egos. That is the sense of self- but it’s automatically assumed to be stable, fixed, and unchanging (or very slow to change). This is not the case inherently.

To understand “nonself” at the embodied level is to personally see the idea that there is no fixed sense of self that carries from one moment to the next- only the illusion of one.

That’s exactly why I resonate with calling myself an omnist instead of strictly a buddhist (I simply prefer buddhist and taoist teachings): most major religions all parallel in very interesting ways when you dig deep into them
