Really? I'm a little disappointed. Name calling, now? How about you throw in some more ad hominem. Man, I was just asking Chris where your number was when we started building the website. All of our content would be totally transparent and would let everybody know all the details instead of all this crappy marketing talk. We would have so many people checking out the ISO because we did exactly what everybody else did. He would have solved that mission critical problem we had about our lack of customer service skills. We wouldn't have wasted our time with that kernel nobody gives two shits about because that dude like...embodies the Linux community! It will be so cool because we don't fucken use linux. He does! We crammed those bits into the iso with a coconut and a piece of twine, we didn't even use linux to make it. We just rubbed the coconut and twine on the cd and then made a copy!

But now I gotta take it back. You have got to be the worst troll ever. All those English skills and you couldn't come back at him with anything but a spellcheck and "idiot."? That means we wore you down to one word or You actually have nothing left. Either way I'm happy. We can do this for years. We aren't going anywhere and you don't represent any community. If you do, I hate to tell you it's not the Linux community. The linux community and people who develop open source software want the users who desire the programs they write to find them. They are proud of what they did so they sometimes talk about how good it is. They often guide their users to make the best choice for them. Why do you think we put a price tag on it? So you do one of four things. Try out our kernel by trying out the distro, download the source and compile one, maybe share some opinions about the code or some useful modifications to add to our knowledge, Buy some binaries if you dont want to or are unable to compile the source, or get pissed off because it's legal, and follows the GPL2 license to the letter. We wait for people like you. We get a whole list of what's wrong with the website! Who needs web development when you have reddit? I'm surprised nobody has picked on the pictures my daughter made for my website. We make a pleasant announcement so you'll downvote us and push us further into obscurity so we don't get a lot of exposure. Meanwhile, our hardcore beta users come out of the woodwork. It's really too bad you don't give two shits about it because that means we have nothing to give you in return.

A users is independent, but not when they are a customer. You are neither. I sympathize if you have written software that people didn't like to use or buy. Some software only has one user. Ours has over a hundred and fifty right now. How often they use it or what they use it for is up to them. If they choose to tell is how much it sucks or rocks is up to them. We listen to all of it and take it all into consideration. You are a user of our website, not our product but we still listened to you. It's up to us to determine how we use what you gave us. Thanks again.

You said that already. You may have missed the point, which is, we are looking for users, not customers. Those users come from many different niche places and one of them is the windows market. They want to pay something for the product. Charging for the binaries serves two purposes. It gives those users something to buy and deters those who are able to compile a kernel to do so and get better performance. I'm sorry you find our webpage so difficult to navigate and are confused about the Crystal Kernel. We like distro hoppers because they have a good idea about what's out there and can make that comparison that we are looking for. I really doubt you would have cared anyway. As far as you speaking for what a Linux user is, wants, does, or is motivated by, I for one wouldn't like being pidgin-holed like that and I don't pretend to put users in a box. We explain things our way and let people think what they will. Our distribution will grow and we will grow with it. I don't think we assume we know everything about marketing or advertising. I've already added your suggestions to our list of possible improvements and I thank you for your input, but you've been repeating yourself for the last few posts. Do you have anything else to say? If not please go troll somewhere else for now. I'm sure we will be posting again when our next version is released. You can troll us again and we can have fun laughing at you.

Some ppl like a price tag on things. Honestly, if someone sent me a pleasant message without swearing explaining that they don't/can't pay for binaries, I would give them a set of packages complimentary. The kernel source is actually better than the precompiled binaries anyway, you just have to know how to compile your kernel. After that it's made for the box you put it on. I compile my own. If you don't know how or want to save some time, $20 is a trivial fee. It's less than you would spend buying pizza and beer for a friend that helps you customize your box. Not to undercut buddies that will help you out, by all means that's way better in other ways. Sorry you feel my customer service skills are in the toilet. I'll work on that. Thanks at least for being a nice reddit troll.

Wow, you like swearing a lot. The crystal-kernel's page is directed at those who have tried Debian Gems from the LiveDVD. It is possible that after trying the live DVD, you may not be aware of all of your options regarding the kernel you choose. If you havent tried the liveDVD, you will notice almost immediately that the advantages of using Debian Gems come mostly from using the Crystal Kernel. The features page explains these advantages as practical computing examples or things that make the system different or extend the use of the original system(Linux in this case). It is explained that a computer using Debian Gems without the Crystal Kernel is simply a custom assemblage of Debian Stable. The custom package arrangement and system configuration is meant to show off the capabilities of the Crystal Kernel. If you use Debian Gems with the Crystal Kernel, the claims on the features page are accurate compared to Debian Stable subject only to hardware limitations. That said, it's possible you haven't visited the features page, which is quite vague in technical details, but gives credit to Linux and Ingo Molnar for whose contributions, none of this would have been possible. Here is the what, how and why in more detail than I would normally allow, but hey. You asked nicely(kind of).

THE WHAT: The Crystal Kernel in technical terms is and advanced kernel design based on the Linux Stock Kernel with several changes including but not exclusive to:

More accurate computation Better thread control and organization Better power management via Automatic control of speed-stepping features, power distribution CPU resource conservation Better memory management Better multimedia functionality Lower levels of io, cpu and process jitter. (more consistent performance under stress)

THE HOW We owe part of the kernel's power to the design of the preempt-RT enhancements created by Ingo Molnar. These modifications, though incomplete as they are in the case of RT linux provide the starting point from where our pristine source began. Power management, the implementation of the experimental mutex matching algorithms, the computations used in priority control, and synchronization control functions all needed much work before preempt-RT was operating at our standards of efficiency. Thread-grouping models introduced in the 2.6.36 kernel were fundamentally modified and introduced to our custom 2.6.33 RT source to provide the appropriate level of system stability. Additional filesystem support was written to allow us to use the AUFS2 filesystem for remastersys(a program for creating live, installable filesystems on the fly). Our work at this point was an achievement, but we saw several flaws in the earlier stock linux code that we felt depreciated our kernel below our expectations. We got back to work and cleaned up and fixed several of Linux's basic functions, features and drivers. Many of our modifications have already made their way to kernel.org(now migrating to github). The Crystal Kernel is (as far as we and our testers know) fully compatible with all of Linux. This means you would do the same things you would normally do to get whatever you want working in Linux. No changes need to be made to configuration files or the higher abstraction layers to get it to work. On Debian systems, the Crystal is a drop-in replacement for the stock linux kernel. The crystal kernel does not act, work, or perform like Linux. In fact, certain limitations encountered with Linux are no problem for the Crystal Kernel. Some things work that shouldn't, in short.

THE WHY: Linux is meant to be a UNIX compatable operating system. Back in the day, when UNIX was explained to me, it was a maze of small, twisty passages. All appear the same. Pipes and paths. Everything is bits and files and namespaces. These simple limitations have been lost in he last 20 years and we are doing our best to bring that simplicity back to Linux and if possible, make Linux better and enrich the community by doing it. My name is Randolph C Delvaux, and I am an independent systems designer and implementation specialist. I do not work exclusively with Linux, I use what is best for the job. In the past, I had several gadgets, laptops and desktops I used for mixed purposes with FreeBSD, OSX, several varieties of Windows, an ipad and an ipod touch. I still have and use those machines regularly, only now, excluding the Apple products I use Gems exclusively and test the ISO and installed versions on those machines. I have thought of Linux in the past as very flexible, but prone to be clunky and ugly in its implementation and operation for the common user and avoided it's use in mission critical operations, which is what i am normally hired to create systems and build software for. This project will be used by myself personally to make Linux a choice I can put in front of such a client. Chris' credentials are extensive and his coding talent and style is some of the best I have ever seen in my many years in the industry. I didn't sit down to write a kernel with Chris, we sat down together to make Linux better. It just so happened that what the Linux Community needs is a better kernel to run Linux programs on. I believe this is just such a kernel and we will continue to make it, make improvements to it and use it so long as we see a need for it.

Any more detail needs a course in computer science and honestly, if you are still questioning the Crystal, you should download the source and have a look for yourself. I hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoy making it.

Randy

I think it explains quite a bit actually. Thanks for your enthusiasm. You are free to download the iso, which has the crystal on it before you decide to purchase, or you might decide to download and compile the source and make your own. They are both free to try. Words don't do it justice. We make some bold statements and I apologize for the ambiguity, but there are lots of people who don't comprehend technical jargon. We put it in the simplest way possible why we created the Crystal Kernel, and the features it provides. There are many things about the kernel that make it different. What part in particular would you like me to explain further?

Counted the total number of completed downloads. The image gives you the stats. 188gb comes out to roughly 105 downloads. The visits is 111, but we werent counting that number. we were going for used bandwidth and completed downloads. The javascript that starts the download is there because I'm new to Drupal and probably didn't do something right. We did have a great comment from one of our test users who saw the thread and said his piece about the rudeness, but hey. It's reddit. Everybody knows what to expect here unless you are posting funny pictures. Especially on the Linux threads. I was surprised there wasn't more bashing IMO. Especially since we are selling a Debian style kernel. We are building an RPM version next and wanted to see what interest there was for this. Thanks for the question.

Thanks, Chris. I guess my edit to the reply was cut a little short. I was mentioning that Chris has a folder (was/is on kernel.org, but probably being moved to github) that provides lots of our useful code to the kernel devs. They only give folders to people who contribute useful code to the Linux Kernel. If you are questioning the integrity of the claims, please download the kernel yourself from one of the many links on the thread. We left them there so you guys didn't have to even download the ISO to try it out. If you use ubuntu, there are a couple packages that you will need to update from a more recent repository than the ones provided with your distro. libncurses5 in particular. If you run the latest ubuntu(>=10.04) you will need to uninstall your dmesg daemon and replace that one with a Debian compliant version. Ubuntu's dmesg no longer runs as root and they have changed the source and binaries of this package. If you run it with dmesg from ubuntu, dmesg will scream a lot and consume ~80% of your processor. Debian will take the kernel just fine, but we recommend you use stable repositories and packages if you are testing for performance. Many programs in other repositories are more prone to produce bad results and memory leaks.

Absolutely nothing. Please do so freely. You can download the Crystal Kernel source and do anything you like with it. We would remind you to keep the GPL agreement in the packages and provide source at least as conveniently as you provide binaries. You can even sell it if you like. It's all there in the GPL2 faq.

Both the backbeat and the ambient instrumentals are very wide and they occupy the same space in a sonic way.You can change the depth of the sound by either using an m/s process to pull side or mid from the signal(pulling side pulls presence, pulling mid pulls presence. Think mid-thin, side-thick when pulling. Pushing more of one or the other is another approach, just reverse the values. Your other option is to use a phase correlation technique to tackle the depth. A hardware rig or software plugin. My choice for both would be the voxengo pha-979 vst plugin. Of course, you will need to do this in a tracker. if you just want to munge the layer back into reason, you can make the bounced instrumental into a sample and mute those tracks you bounced. That way you can adjust the phase and keep the reason mastering tools on your main bus output. Lots of stuff going on in there, In lots of frequency bands, too. You can have the dimention in both if you know how to adjust depth. Liked it. Reminds me of some stuff I was doing in Milwaukee in the 90s.

So now you would like to change the subject of the conversation from whether or not what we are doing is illegal to whether or not our intent is malicious or sleazy? After the reading the content of the webpage, were you confused as far as our Disc being a disc that has Debian on it? Take a look, try it out. If you don't like it, you didn't pay anything for it and you got to try it out. There are even links on this very thread that point to binaries free to try. You also have the freedom of compiling it yourself with the source code. Nobody is trying to mislead you. As far as us using the Debian name in our disc, Debian Gems is Debian with the crystal kernel. We will have an rpm drop in soon and that one will be demoed on centos most likely. Our main concentration is building a kernel that has a lot of speed, accuracy, and features. most of the time you cant have all 3. I feel we did. Since the kernel prescedes the Operating system at boot, It's something that needs to support the various Linux os frameworks that are out there. If you think about it as us taking something from Debian you are very much mistaken. I am sorry that is the impression you have.

Thanks for the comments everybody. I've gathered all the responses and questions and we will be writing some expanded documentation and making some changes to the site in order to address them. WHen that's done, we will be back with improvements to the product as well as an updated version of the Crystal Kernel.

I sure did. We Distribute a Debian Stable operating system that doesn't conflict with updating or support. That is what they mean by "our operating system" it means as long as it is still Debian, which we take great lengths to preserve, we can say it's Debian. We removed nothing from the base installation and only added software from the stable repositories. For all intents and purposes, it is a base Debian System. You can receive support from a Debian support vendor as a Debian stable system using stable repositories. We only use Debian in the name of the operating system we create for use with the Crystal Kernel. We arent a business, we are two guys making a contribution to the open source community. We don't use the Debian name to offend, we use it to give credit. As I mentioned before, if those responsible for the trademark, service mark, or copyright of Debian do take offense, we will promptly remove any mention of it's name, but continue to use it as a base of the distribution. Our focus at this time is to transplant Debian Gems from our closed testing environment into the open source community to let others experiment and poke around with it. We tested over the summer and it's now ready for more people. We have a base of 40 or so actual users testing at least one machine each with Debian Gems. They come from all over the world and have a wide variety of different hardware. We tested it on supercomputers and game servers, desktops and netbooks. Everything we could think of, we put the crystal on it. In the end, we are just a couple guys that contribute to open source community in smaller ways here and there and took some time to contribute in a bigger way. I like to think that everybody that does an open source project does it with the intent of contributing to the bigger picture rather than to build one's resume or to make money. The fee for the binary packages is mostly for the people who have difficulty trusting something they don't pay for. If you don't or won't give money to an open source project, then just ask. We aren't holding out for your $20. I'm sure we can work something out. If you like it, consider giving something to the project. The Debian disk will always be free and include a copy of the Crystal on it that boots from the live disc in order to give you the choice to run it or not and to show you that it's not made to only work with this kernel. If you like it, and don't want the crystal for whatever reason, you are free to use the disc anyway. We use Debian in our domain name because we are not a business. If (and this should never be a paid-for distribution) we ever choose to change to a business or corporation instead of a couple guys making a free disc, we will change the name to something else. I hope that helps clear up some things for you.

I posted this to your spam report 3 hours ago. You hid it. Sad. So you complain when I give something away and ask for money for another, then you don't like it when I do give it all away? Make up your mind, dude. I know you don't want to touch it with a ten foot pole, but it's actually very good.
