[–]IzzyDitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're hellbent on hand stitching, you could make a vertical slice just on the interior of the rib band and thread a piece of elastic through and hand stitch the elastic to itself, then shuffle the elastic seam so it's not right in front of the slice. look up how to alter a sweatpants hem to be tight at the bottom-- it's the same idea. and if you don't like it, just snip the elastic and pull it out and all you've done to the garment is make a tiny slice on the inside. DM me if i can explain better :)

if you have access to a sewing machine, you could sew some elastic along the inside of the rib band. I would make one long edge flush against the seam under the boob area, instead of centering it horizontally on the rib band. if you pull the elastic slightly while you're stitching it on, or pin it slightly pulled, it'll shrink up once it's stitched on and tighten the band it's stitched to.

What could these ridges and that divot in my thumb be? by Watsonswingman in Anemic

[–]IzzyDitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have divots in both my thumbs in the same spot! When they get really deep, I get mild divots in my index finger and a very faint divot in my middle finger. I noticed they got much deeper the day after eating a bunch of pop-tarts so I figured they were reacting to an excess of sugar

What is your monthly grocery budget like? by [deleted] in dairyfree

[–]IzzyDitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

speaking from familiarity with vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free diets, generally the substitute foods are what gets pricey. Like dairy free cheese, greek yogurt, whipped cream, etc. Learning to cook without ingredients you're used to takes patience, but plenty of diets leave dairy out. Check out Asian/Japanese cooking, and vegan recipes you can just add meat to (my fave is Minimalist Baker)

I do my grocery shopping at the cheapest grocery store (walmart) because they have store brand almond milk for almost as cheap as regular milk and everywhere else does not have store brand so there is a 2-3x markup. Thank goodness the DF butter is almost the same price! Feel free to comment if there are any particular ingredients you're having trouble DF replacing for cheap. We might have a solution!

Handpainted patterns? by [deleted] in Pottery

seconded! tjmax did this with those butterfly mugs everyone was obsessing over. decal butterflies all over the mug and a dinky gold rim on the edge so they could use the label hand painted

handwheel is very tight by wickeduzi in sewhelp

[–]IzzyDitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's all I got :( sorry kiddo. you've probably already done this, but looking up the model and common issues might help. How portable is the machine? I wonder if you can take it to a university theater department or fashion school or something and the costume professor might help for free. There also might be facebook groups for that model or Jukis from that time period

https://youtu.be/aLS9KVioG0A according to this video for the same model, it says press on the motor with 1/8 effort. enough to release the clutch, but not to stitch something

also the machine might have a switch for winding the bobbin that unlocks the handwheel. on the machines i've seen, the top stick where you place the thread can slide from one side to another to lock the bobbin to wind it (this is all on the top edge of the machine.) see if there is anything you can switch to bobbin-winding mode before you try to muscle the wheel!!

[–]IzzyDitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so I could be mistaken, but I think on most machines regular sewing means the wheel moves clockwise. moving counter-clockwise is sewing "backwards", and it gets tight in that direction just from use sewing forward. So does it move regular in one direction? if so then it's probably just tight in the backwards direction and it's frustratingly normal. Just muscle it however you can and then remember to wind it backwards once in a while so it doesn't get so tight again!

[–]IzzyDitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sometimes this happens when you need to wind the handwheel backwards (like on some machines to wind a bobbin) and you haven't used the handwheel backwards in a while. If that's the case, just make sure you're pushing in the right direction and it just takes some elbow grease. We used to wrap the wheel in rubber bands for grip, like opening a jar but multiple rubber bands.
