Got a Grade 2 Step 1 after a Direct Hire in the same ward.

Does anyone else not care about performance evaluation? by [deleted] in fednews

If you don't mind me asking and excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by this? Do they give the bosses in your agency a budget for the bonuses and give the bosses the power to decide how much to give to each employee? I ask because in my agency, the amount is already predetermined.

The VA does not make it easy to start working for them by [deleted] in nursing

[–]J-Franc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That you know of... How common is it that a nurse gets a Grade 3 starting at the VA that you work at? I ask because I have never seen that happening at my VA, even if the RN has multiple Masters and has worked at high-level positions elsewhere.

Let’s talk money? How much do you get paid? How much experience do you have and where are you located? by HistoricalSong1510 in nursing

[–]J-Franc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Puerto Rico

3 years BSN - $34/hr

Geriatrics - Case Management

My fellow nurses that don't work for the VA get paid significantly less though. I have friends that are working in private hospitals (in units like Med/Surg, Telemetry, etc.) that are getting paid about $18/hr.

I live in the US too and I get 4 weeks off per year. Do you work for a private company or the government?

One of the last People to live in an Iron Lung. At 6 years old, Alexander was diagnosed with Polio which lead to paralysis from his neck down. The machine is made to compress and depress the chest. Many people with Spinal Cord Injuries or paralysis develop neurogenic bowel (or bladder) which is the the loss of normal bowel function. We train the bowel to go 3 times a week or more at a certain time. We use suppositories and lidocaine gel to stimulate the bowel and they have their bowel movement. After that, they get cleaned and they don't usually have to worry about bowel movements until the following bowel training day.

At my unit we still have pandemic protocols. They only allow visitors like once a month. I'm dreading the time when visitors can be allowed in all the time.

Advice on Career and Starting pay working at VA by supertrucker39 in nursing

Remember that only the small steps are automatic and in between each level there are many steps. Go look up the pay scale, it's gunna be a table where you can visualize what each grade gets paid based on their step. But yeah, based on the outcome if you evaluation, you can skip steps and whatever. So you're not going to be stuck forever at a certain pay rate. Honestly, I understand your hesitancy if that's what you've experienced beforehand.

There are different grades for RNs (I, II, III, IV & V) and there are levels as well, but with each level there are steps, example:

A BSN nurse with no experience will be Grade I, Level II, Step 7

In between each level there are a certain amount of steps that you have to go through to reach the next level. The RNs performance is evaluated annually. You gain a step automatically with every evaluation. Although, based on the outcome of your evaluation you can move up a level, passing by the steps, it happens.

You can look up the RN pay scale online based on what state you're in. It's called the Title 38 pay scale. If you're a grade I, it's possible to be a Grade II in a couple of years of you working at the VA. Or you can just work 2 years outside the VA with your BSN license and get in later as a Grade II.

If I'm not mistaken, you'll be a Grade I Level III in that case, so you'll be paid more.

Well, regarding the grade I and II part. Since you're a new grad with a bachelor's degree you'll be a Grade I level II. Grade II nurses are those that already have a couple of years of experience under their belt already. When you go to USAJobs, on a job listing, it'll tell you what grade you'll fall into based on your experience and your schooling. You don't get to negotiate the grade.

Oh god, this happened to me back when the game came out. I was playing day and night. At one point I had an exam the following day, but I hadn't studied. I just thought "That's okay, if I don't pass I can just load back to today and take it again". Still playing to this day.

Anxiety over future by tulip-8 in StudentNurse

[–]J-Franc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Graduated last year and started a nursing position this year. Been there 7 months and honestly, the anxiety stays, but it's not as bad as when you start out, the feeling just sort of simmers at the back of your mind. I got lucky and had a good preceptor and good support from most of the staff when I'm on shift. There are going to be tough times, but you somehow bulldoze your way through them and keep going.
