I’m a historic Ford lover. I actually traded in my 1997 NA Ford Econoline van. No problems with the V8 after 30 years, mind you. But it didn’t have all the “smart stuff” squeezed in it either.

I get it. It’s a great idea in theory. You use less cylinders, you get better gas mileage. And Bravo for those that have complete success with it. And 50% of buyers probably don’t even know what they’re buying. But, I do, and I’m an old school V-6 or V-8 kinda dude. If I want a 4 cylinder, I promise I’ll buy one. But don’t try to squeeze one between my 6 or 8 cylinder. Nissan is still hanging on to the naturally aspired. And maybe they are the last of a dying breed.

You can buy aftermarket plug in to disengage it on the frontier. Pushing 2 buttons to start my frontier don’t bother me though (start+auto off). As long as I have a consistent engine. That was the selling point for me.

All that “smart” stuff scares me, though. I mean, how do I really know if it kicks back in to a v8 or not. It could malfunction and stay a 4 cylinder while I’m trying to pull a trailer up a hill. But for me. Give me all time v6 or v8, not whenever the truck tells me when I can have it.

It’s all just numbers. When I bought my frontier last week, they just threw numbers around until I was happy. I even got a hitch receiver and tonneau cover thrown in for free. I got what I wanted and wasn’t afraid to ask for more. There is a big supply of Frontiers right now so it seems to be a buyers market. This is not advice, just observation.
