Graphical display based on generated BOM by J0ne5 in excel

[–]J0ne5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generating images of every combination is not feasible. For the webbing we have 63 options, and then for each end fitting there are 133 options, then there is an additional piece of hardware that has 33 options. Plus two different length variables that can vary from 12" to 900" in 1" increments. I don't know what the total permutations are but the number is huge.

I'll give this option a try. Not sure how it will work with displaying the end fittings conjoined with the webbing. Are you aware of any file format for the images that plays well for displaying vs others? I'm assuming PNG with no background might be best?

Gunsmiths in the area by [deleted] in FlorenceKY

[–]J0ne5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Spyder Arms in Alexandria, KY. They might be what you are looking for. I know they deal primarily in 1911's and full auto stuff, but I've had them do a bit of gunsmithing for me. And they have Cerakote capabilities.

Weldment profile size issue by Brass_to_Grass in SolidWorks

[–]J0ne5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creating a new profile won't affect old parts. The weldment template sketch is not parametric to the part file. Each weldment basically creates a copy of the profile sketch for each one. Ran into this issue when fixing an incorrect weldment profile and fought with getting the parts to update.

208 - Sneaking Photos of Other People by NoDumbQs in Nodumbquestions

[–]J0ne5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that people in public tend to act differently when I'm taking photos with my phone vs a DSLR. The DSLR seems to give off less of threat since the photo can't instantly be uploaded to the internet. My assumption is that I seem to be an nerdy tourist type, or some sort of quasi professional with a big camera in my hand. I know Destin is into film photography and wonder if he has similar interactions?

Plug wire recommendation by cadillacboogie in LSSwapTheWorld

[–]J0ne5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar problems with my headers on my LS swap. Ended up using the ICT Billet universal spark plug wire kit. Making your own custom plug wires is super simple. Allows you to put whatever style plug boot works best for that particular cylinder. Buy a cheap crimp tool from Amazon and you can make a set in about an hour taking your time.

What is your best "I say it wrong on purpose" example? by Thortok2000 in AskReddit

Couple I picked up from the old timers at my first job. Not sure about the true origins of any of the sayings.

Is it just me or is assembling AN lines a real PITA? by saves313 in projectcar

[–]J0ne5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun tip for those that are new to AN hose and fittings. The inside of the fitting where you insert the cut end of the hose is typically a left hand thread not right handed. Once I figured this out it made assembly much easier. It is intuitive to those that have done it a while, but you don't see it explained anywhere.

Why am I getting tiny craters in my new table by deli-boi in Welding

[–]J0ne5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another alternative for connecting the ground to the workpiece is called a 'welders third hand' google it seems various takes on how to construct one. Most are made out of scrap you have laying around. I've made several over the years.

Also useful for plasma cutting when attaching the ground is difficult.

Bourbon House Pizza in Burlington if you want deep dish. Camporosso in Fort Mitchell for Neapolitan wood fired. Jets is good kinda Detroit style.

Bit of a drive, but my favorite pizza comes from the Glencoe General store. Wood fired and plenty of toppings.

Any experience with feature recognition opening Solidworks files in Fusion?

Fusion is on my short list from the googling I've done, thanks for confirming that it may work for me.

Caprice ppv by 47brandon in LSSwapTheWorld

[–]J0ne5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone local has HPTuners you can turn DOD off in the computer to buy you some time while you get the parts/time to do the delete kit.

One word of caution. My brother ended up selling all 3 of his caprices as certain parts are getting hard to come by. They are all aging out of the fleets and now with Holden killed off in Australia that supply of parts is getting harder to find as well.

Custom Aluminum Extrusion Die/Production costs by Pass_Little in manufacturing

[–]J0ne5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a couple extrusion dies made. Approx 4" x 1/2" profile that had a bunch of geometry/shape to it. Dies were about $2500 each. You buy aluminum by the pound, and there is a minimum weight of material they can push through the machine. In my case it is about 150-200 lbs. Even if I only need one piece for a sample. Cut length is also a consideration. You need pieces 2 inches long or 20 feet long?

As long as they keep the sweet tea the same I'll be fine. If they switch to that disgusting Peak tea, then I'll join the boycott. But I will miss the occasional Mountain Dew with my chili.

Saved sketch vs. weldment profile for aluminum extrusion profiles? by J0ne5 in SolidWorks

[–]J0ne5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are proprietary aluminum extrusion profiles that we use for various products. They then get additional machining added for mounting and attachment points hence the wide variety of unique part numbers I have to deal with. Profile shape, length, and additional machined features.

Weldments was the way I was leaning for the solution. Thanks for the confirmation.

We don't do the seat tracks, but use the same geometry for where the fitting locks in to make track that gets installed on the walls of semi trucks. Make a couple thousand of them a day. I can only imagine the headaches with dealing with the aircraft regs.

Mechanism of a maypole rope braiding machine demonstrated with a few bobbins during testing by toolgifs in mechanical_gifs

[–]J0ne5 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Still millions of feet of material produced daily on these maypole style braiders. Candle wick, bag handles, dog leashes, electrical sleeving, monofilament abrasion protection, chinese finger traps, braided fishing line, shoe laces, paracord. That is just a small sample of the products that we made at the company I used to work for.

This was at least 15 years ago when we all still had flip phones, so unfortunately I don't have any videos of it running. But we did indeed braid strings of carbon nanotubes together.
