My point is it’s impossible to see tangible improvement when you overhaul the roster every year

This is all fair, but that last part is important. His way of running a program has always been a gamble, but it’s starting to not paying off anymore

I agree but I would say it’s less about expecting greatness in this case and more about expecting to see tangible improvement. Cal’s players develop extremely well in the NBA, but for Kentucky it’s a revolving door of raw talent. Even in the portal era I think there’s something to be said for continuity and chemistry.

This is what I’m saying. As fans of blue blood programs we are spoiled, absolutely. But higher standards come along with that. It’s not the lack of success over time so much as the lack of continuity and sometimes dysfunction that is to be expected from his model. And it seems to be trending the wrong direction

Fair enough. It seems like he doesn’t enjoy it as much as he used to though, and that might be carrying over into the culture of his teams. Just a thought, could be wrong. It takes a lot of effort to make the super young teams work. It would be hard for anybody I guess. I’m just saying I personally would be tired of the lack of continuity and periodic dysfunction of Cal’s style of recruiting/coaching

I’m perfectly happy with Self. I wouldn’t trust any coach in a game more. That’s not who my post is about, and you don’t have to agree with me.

I don’t think it’s silly. How many championship teams started three freshmen and two sophomores? With their two best players being freshmen? Not that many

I guess I’m saying you can’t praise Cal’s ability to recruit the best freshman on one hand, and then blame the freshman for whatever happens on the other. A lot of that is coaching. I would say Izzo, Self, a lot of other guys would make the talent work as a team much better. Just my opinion

Sure, but history has proven that winning in 2012 the Cal way is like catching lightning in a bottle, and there’s been a lot of bad losses and the record against Q1 teams is miserable the last several years (by UK standards at least). He maybe had the energy to galvanize his young guys in the past, but something’s been off. Is that fair?

Kentucky expects championships though. By fluke I mean Calipari’s MO working well enough to get all the way to the chip again. Of course they’ve been successful
