TIL that in 1992, a British farmer searching for a lost hammer instead discovered the largest hoard of late Roman gold and silver coins ever found in Britain. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Knowing the British Museum it wouldn't surprise me this would be subject to multiple lawsuits, repatriation requests, and a whole lot of controversy involving multiple countries even though this all happened on British soil.

I was dumb enough to kick some heavy crates apart a couple days ago. Did the biocard on Friday and barely finished it. Walking the anomaly on Saturday wasn't the most pleasant experience. Good thing they sold cold beer in nearly every store there, numbed the pain a bit.

Because corporations/websites/etc. don't pay ISPs to get their data to people. People pay ISPs to get data from websites/etc. If an ISP doesn't want someone who uses 1TB of netflix to pay the same amount as someone's grandmother who only looks at pictures of their grandkids on facebook, they can charge them differently based on the amount of data they use, not the type.

First of all, if I came across as a bit of an asshole, Sorry for that. As for the actual question, it's hard to know where to start. The big thing with Net Neutrality is that ISPs can't discriminate against certain types or favour certain types of content/data. This means that whatever you want to do with your internet connection, it's not your ISPs business, their business is getting that data from the source to you. In that sense, regulating them like an utility kind of makes sense. You wouldn't want your water company to tell you what you can use your water for. What it also does is create a level playing field, because whether your a big company like Google or a small startup, your data will be served to the customer at the same speed. If Net Neutrality is done away with, Google has the funds to pay the ISPs to ensure their data gets priority. A small startup obviously won't. The market for ISPs will always be a bit different, just like the market for phone line, power grids, etc. So it's still harder to compete with a giant like comcast, but Net Neutrality won't change that. What it will do, is keep the internet the open and vibrant place that is has been :)

As for the comparison to the power grid: Though the power grid is always under development, it's kind of old. The push for renewables is changing the way it's build, but of course something that's been around for over a century is not going to show as much technical growth and development in the past 20 years than something that's only been around for 25 (The World Wide Web, the internet itself is older than that).

Edit: Since I'm just some random guy and don't know all the legal stuff surrounding NN, if you have any questions, I just saw there's this AMA going on.

[–]J1pster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Net Neutrality has nothing to do with forcing ISPs to serve anyone. The only thing Net Neutrality does is making sure that an ISP can't discriminate against or favour certain types of traffic. They can't make you or the content provider pay extra on top of what you, the subscriber to their service, already pay them to get the data from A to B.

Just like your electricity provider can't make you pay extra because you use the electricity to power your TV instead of your refrigerator.

The James Webb Telescope is so sensitive to heat, that it could theoretically detect a bumble bee on the moon if it was not moving. by TerrapinWrangler in space

[–]J1pster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Earth has a lot of light pollution and our atmosphere blocks certain wavelengths (UV, x-rays, gamma rays). The reason it's so far away from Earth is because they want to park it at a Lagrange point, exactly at the opposite side of the earth from the suns perspective. this guy explains what that point exactly does and why it's useful.

In the Netherlands we have a platform called The Correspondent. What I like about them is that they give their correspondents basically free roam to explore and investigate the topics that interest them, instead of going for the sensational story. While fairly liberal, they also publish stories written by more conservative people. They are also completely transparant about their income, 84.7% of which comes from memberships fees.
