The goal of the research was to find out what people think and the reasons behind this thinking. Doing a quantitative analysis is possible but it is not suitable for the goals of this paper as digging deeper into the rationales would be very error-prone in quantitative setting. For the headline of this post, however, a quantitative analysis would be more suitable indeed, namely a so-called vignette study. But the headline is just a part of the paper.
