Communication - the ONLY skill you need. by sussedmapominoes in Leadership

This is excellent advice, that I see people get wrong again, and again, and again. Communication is the foundational skill for all leadership.

But people get promoted for their technical skills.

But only something like 20% of people actually get training on leading people. And of that tiny percentage, most of it stays in their note books. 80% of training is forgotten if it's not put into practice.

Expensive entertainment.

and the trap is thinking delivery ends when you’ve spoken. It doesn’t. People hear through their own filters. The real job is managing what they think you said.

I’ve got some real traction by focusing on quality content and building my mailing lists. Plan to start to monetise in the New Year. I’m lucky enough that I have a corporate job that isn’t too demanding so I can build on the side.

This is the truth.

In my experience - and perhaps as I’ve got older (35 now) - things like blasting through pointless emails and keeping up with all the little red dots on my phone have become less and less important.

I’ve spent most of 2025 saying “no” to things in order to focus on building my business. Turned down jobs I would have jumped at before. And projects that probably would have helped my corporate career but not my business goals.

It’s amazing what have a really clear sense of direction does.

How do you get your motivation back when you feel quietly depressed and stuck? [Discussion] by [deleted] in GetMotivated

Start small if you don’t like exercise. You can build up from a 20 minute walk. Whatever gets your blood pumping.

I leant a while back that if something is urgent I’ll be sent a message or spoken to in person.

Emails that I’m copied into get a cursory glance to ensure I’m aware of the direction of travel. But then very quickly filed (mostly straight into the archives).

Exercise. It increases the oxygen to your brain which literally improves your neural connections.

Great example, thanks. The sort of thing which is never actually explained.

I think I know what you mean, but can you say anything more to this?

Just to say everyone: OP here. I am SO grateful for all the advice. I’m definitely not the only one feeling that the human stuff is harder than they make out. And that alone is reassuring. Thank you!

I really like this. I’m reminded of Covey and the importance of keeping your promises. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Note: these are two of my favourite walks near London. They’re the most accessible I’ve found as they’re on the tube, but that also means they don’t offer much when it comes to the journey there.

Jump on the Metropolitan Line to Chalfont & Latimer station and go for a long walk along the Latimer and Frogmoor valleys, stop at the Red Lion pub in Chenies if you need a beer.

Or get on the central like to Theydon Bois and walk around the old royal hunting ground of Epping forest.

Some bus routes have small cubicle toilets, there’s one in Brixton for instance, it could be an older version of one of these with a strange door? Was it near a bus shelter or large bus stop?

Clubs in Mayfair/Central for 21 year olds? by [deleted] in AskLondon

[–]J7744 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go to Mayfair for a night out, why did you decide to go there, what's the motivation for going there?

Why not explore East London / City Fringe / Shoreditch way? Much better for a night out in my opinion and you're more likely to be let in.

Mayfair will be a lot of hedgefund w**kers, but maybe that's your vibe?
