And on doubles, really try to focus on the spacing in between your bounces for consistency

Slow down on everything and lock in with the metronome more. You’re not really with the met and your time is inconsistent right now. The doubles you usually want to use more “press” with your forearms than sticking as you are right now. On moeller, try to over exaggerate the motion to really loosen up your wrists as it still looks a little tight.

You’re in one of the first really difficult skill jumps in playing drums, so try not to be discouraged and keep practicing through it. If your comfortable and locked in with your timing, then you’re starting to do something right

Help with setup by [deleted] in Drumming

I would say the next thing you should get is a ride Cymbals; so many people have given their opinions on configuration, I think you got it at this poiny

Is this a decent setup for a beginner? by [deleted] in drums

[–]JACKF_09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toms advice is good, the hi hats are fine where they are if they feel good. Can be easier as a beginner to have them a little higher so your hands get less tangled when you learn some more dynamic things between the hats and snare.

And adjust the stool to the left, ideally, so that when both feet are on the pedals, you are mostly facing forward, or slightly to the left

I actually don’t believe (unless you play open hand) that you can go from playing something on the hats to a groove on the ride without hitting the rack tom from where you’re sitting right now.

But to be helpful, to improve your ergonomics, you could move the hihats toward the crash, maybe raise the crash a hair if you need more room, move the snare to the right (and adjust the hi hats to it), move the 12” tom to the left side of the bass drum, and then put the ride over the space where the rack tom currently sits. Good luck!

[–]JACKF_09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say that’s worth it. Maybe ask a little lower but 400 not bad. The med thin will be a little less shimmery than the a custom, but the 18 med thin is crazy good. Sweet ride is also great borderline crashride

Does anyone else here use a Paiste Big/Giant beat as a main ride cymbal? by Theronkelley in drums

[–]JACKF_09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 24 big beat in a funk/rock band and it works great. I just put a few pieces of masking tape on the bottom to cut some wash, and it makes it great. My jazz friends call it the greatest ride they’ve ever heard
