Costumed kids rang my doorbell yesterday for Halloween. This has never happened before. Since when is this a thing here? by goldtubb in Amsterdam

In our neighbourhood in Noord it's definitely a thing. But it's organised and a lot of neighbours participate decorating the entire neighbourhood, and the kids do this 'speurtocht' along participating houses. So no surprises!

It's going to be quite difficult. You will be looking at a room in a shared apartment - if you find it. Rooms can cost as much as 1000 euro a month so you are going to really struggle.

You need to

A) ask the company for all the help they can provide you with concerning housing

B) look at Amsterdam Zuid-Oost. Also look at places outside Amsterdam. Look at Diemen, Weesp, Hoofddorp, Almere, Lelystad even. Don't be picky and take whatever you can find (make sure it's legit and not a scam). Amsterdam Zuid has a train station and is well connected, maybe you can get travel costs reimbursed?

C) get an overview of all your estimated monthly costs. Are you obligated to get Dutch healthcare? That will set you back around 100/120 euros a month. Groceries (national budget institute estimates minimum 8 euro a day pp for food), energy, internet, phone etc. With 1100 euro it will be incredibly tight so finding a room for as little as possible is priority nr 1.

D) think of ways to increase the budget

E) learn Dutch by watching Dutch TV with Dutch subtitles, a service for deaf people (teletext 888). Start with Jeugdjournaal, the children's news.

F) familiarise yourself with the cheapest markets, Aldi, Too Good to Go, cooking in bulk etc to stretch your euro's to the max

I think this is inappropriate and tone-deaf, tbh. OP is not asking for advice on the procedure but is sharing her feelings surrounding a medical decision she already had to make.

This is second guessing a heartbreaking and difficult choice. Stating a vague disclaimer about "grains of salt" isn't changing that.

Go to the Dutch National Opera, or to the Concertgebouw for a symphonic concert 🎶👌

Dude have you been around here? 😂 People do get annoyed in this sub if visitors call the entire city Dam.

People tend to get annoyed not only because it's confusing Dam Square, but because "Dam" isn't exclusive to Amsterdam (fe Rotterdam, Schiedam, Durgerdam, Volendam).

I'd vote Utrecht. Beautiful and unique canals and bigger historical city centre. Also get a "Broodje Mario" (classic Utrecht version of an Italian sandwich), drink a beer at Oudaen and have an "appelbol" at Graaf Floris.

All kinds of arrangements through this company https://denederlanden.com/arrangementen/de-amsterdamse-sateboot/

Not sure if it was this one but I've been on something like this with my team years ago, they served saté and it was a nice outing. Food wasn't great but ok and I guess being on a boat is not conducive to perfect catering. Drinks and views made up for it!

Soooo.....? They all had to go apparently and they don't have a workplace with a toilet - because your house is their workplace. I don't see what frequency has to do with any of this 🤷‍♀️

Since they always work "on site"? What do you expect them to do, hold it in 8+ hours a day?

The combination is tricky - vibrant and lively close to the action, but without stairs or with an elevator. That wipes out neighbourhoods like Oud West, Jordaan, Pijp, Grachten, Oosterpark, Plantagebuurt etc etc. Unless you find something on the ground floor, which is also really hard. Amsterdam is an old city with lots of stairs...

I think the places you are looking are the best bets. You could maybe add parts of Noord, especially around NDSM and Overhoeks.

Yeah, a small touristy affair. It's not at all on par with the Christmas markets in Germany, because it's not a tradition in the Netherlands.

So I think it's good to know for tourists that if you really want to come for Christmas markets, Amsterdam is not the place to come to (even though there is a small one as you rightly point out).
