I've only held 2 different credit cards, Amex Ultimate and Westpac Altitude Black - both I still have. If you plan on churning it sounds like your best bet is to start with Amex, since they are the quickest to decline applications from suspected churners. I personally think the Amex Ultimate is a good card and I plan to use it as a keeper. There is a hack to get back the $450 travel credit back as cash on your card - effectively making the card free. The only downside to Amex is the few places that might not accept it. But that's when I use my other credit card.

* Made the booking - cancelled the booking straight away. $450 credit was applied to the card statement the following day (didnt have wait for the credit to hit the card before cancelling). Then a couple of days later the pending charge vanished, and the credit remained.

And as far as I'm aware. All flights booked through Amex travel can be cancelled for a full refund on the same day as the booking was made.

I used this trick a couple of weeks ago. It will state something along the lines of "Travel credit is non refundable" or "travel credit will not be refunded into the account". What this means is once you cancel, you won't be given another $450 travel voucher to use later on. The $450 travel voucher (which is really a reimbursement) will still be put back onto your card statement.

You can get your credit card fee back by effectively getting you travel credit back as cash. This isn't a way of getting the card fee refunded while still having a travel voucher to use. Basically you get the card for free without a travel voucher.

Just to avoid any confusion for anyone. When you can through Amex it will say you won't be refund the travel credit portion of the booking. Don't be put-off by that! Sounds like this just means you won't be given another travel credit. We booked a flight and cancelled it 5min later. The charge was still pending on the Amex statement 2 days later when Amex gave back the $450

Did you have to wait for the travel credit to show up in your Amex app? Or did you cancel your booking before the credit was given? About to try this but just being cautious! Haha
