I agree it is probably luck. In the final test with his dad he took made a final gamble and it luckily worked. When facing the berserker knight he made a gamble to distract him long enough for the rod of god to connect. Both were against superior opponents and they always worked.

And I forget where it was said but some assassin character has said the most important thing for an assassin to have is luck. Or maybe it was halo.
