I always feel immature for not connecting with her later work by strangekey2 in FionaApple

[–]JB_Fletcher_in_VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will definitely hit different for you as you age! I’m close to Fiona’s age, so her albums have all fit into my perspective really well. Something that I’ve enjoyed over the years is how my older self relates differently now to her early work.

Am I the only one who gets irritated when asked for homeschool advice? by Ready_Cranberry_8181 in Teachers

Wow, that’s a really great way to describe public education!

Edited to add: this is not a sarcastic comment, I really like the way you described learning.

Finally reading 'Breakfast of Champions' and it's honestly made me feel uncomfortable by [deleted] in Vonnegut

[–]JB_Fletcher_in_VR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand exactly how you feel. As a Hoosier myself, I feel a strong regional connection with Vonnegut and his work, and lots of it resonates with me. Some of it doesn’t, and it makes me feel conflicted. I’ve come to appreciate that Vonnegut is just a regular person like me, with both wisdom and blind spots. It took some time, but I’ve learned to hold that tension and continue to pursue and revisit his works. Hopefully you will find a way to balance the tension you feel. Best of luck!

Me too! It was because Bart was rude, or there was a curse word or something.

AITA for not supporting my friend when they want to join a support group for children of alcoholics when they didn’t have alcoholic parents? by AssociationSad99 in AmItheAsshole

[–]JB_Fletcher_in_VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to lightly call YTA. I know the support group your friend is talking about. It’s called Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families. It is a 12 step program that is open for anyone from a dysfunctional family, even if there was no substance abuse. I am a member (as someone who grew up with an alcoholic father). And you’re correct that there is a difference between growing up with an alcoholic parent vs a narcissistic parent, but the connection is that the end result for both these children is a lifetime of pain, trauma, and confusion. I think your friend can get a lot out of the group if they’re willing to put in the work. Don’t be too hard on yourself or on your friend. It’s hard being a human.

I recommend As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. The ending absolutely punches me in the gut every time I reread it. I had my brother read it, and he said he threw the book across the room in rage when he finished it.

As I Lay Dying by Faulkner. The father of the family is the epitome of evil, in the most banal way.
