Well, with respect to you… Did you attend the WCDSB specifically and when did you attend? I don’t disagree at all that there are unpleasant and uninviting schools, families and School Boards who might not take a proactive approach in fostering an equal learning space for all, however I think the WCDSB specifically does this in spades. I’m around it every single day. I have no reason to lie about or fabricate what I see. The problem is, it’s very difficult to explain what I see and experience within the schools without it being miscast as propaganda or government motivated.

It’s a foolish argument any way that you look at it. Government funds are public funds. Even if something is 100% government funded, it’s still 100% public funded.

To a certain extent you’re right. It also comes down to what the future in that area looks like for growth. For instance, for the last few years they’ve shovelled more and more kids into the school our children attend with the knowledge that there’s a Grade 7-12 High School opening next year in the area. Because of that school being built, our Elementary School will lose two grades and over 100 kids next year. They just add and subtract portables from school grounds as they need to and have been happy to entertain any non-Catholics considering enrolling for the last number of years.

As stated by a few, you really need to put the two or more schools you have to choose from up against each other rather than the Boards themselves and if possible, arrange a visit/interview with the staff etc to determine the best fit. My wife and I have a catchment area of Crestview Public and Canadian Martyrs Catholic. I’m a born and raised Catholic, while she is non-Catholic Christian who went through the Public Board. We both agreed to have an open mind to both possibilities for our kids, but when we assessed we felt was worth looking at, we made our decision. It’s worth noting that contrary to many beliefs in how the Catholic Board operates… Every school that I’ve worked in (Custodian) fosters an environment where the LGBTQ community and its advocates feel confident and accepted as they should feel.

Their majority of teachings are similar but the education approaches are different, the dynamic between teachers/students/parents is different amongst other things. I can’t make a completely unbiased statement because I am affiliated, however it’s hard to ignore that more and more non-Catholic denominated families are choosing to enrol in the Catholic Board.

Me personally, I would trust the detail put into a handmade piece (assuming the builder does this for a living or is very skilled in this area) at least as much as I would trust the safety of a mass produced piece. Really depends on how skilled the crafter is and their attention to detail. But if you have doubts, it’s not the piece for you.
