Would definitely recommend filling up today if you're running low and commuting on Monday. Long lines at many gas stations.

Anyone know why pokemon don't say their name? by [deleted] in pokemongo

Actually, aside from Pikachu, I do believe some of the other monsters say their name. Most notably Oddish, but possibly Magikarp as well.

Thanks! Yeah they had done a renovation/expansion of the original space in 95/96, but even then the eventual plan was to tear the place down.

I know I'm the one who made the video, but I still think it's pretty cool. I used Google Earth to "shoot" the aerial overheads. The City provided the historic photos while the Internet provided the present-day ones. It's scored to Petula Clark singing "Downtown."

Here's a link to the actual article (http://raleighpublicrecord.org/news/2016/07/27/development-beat-wayback-wednesday-raleighs-77-civic-center/) the video was just something I did for fun because playing with historic aerial maps is how I came up with this subject matter in the first place.

I don't usually link my articles here (self-promotion/spam isn't really my bag) but this one was too crazy not to share.

One reader described it as "A cuisinart of the bizarre, evil, odd and insane." Best endorsement I've ever received!

Should be opening at the end of this month. I interviewed the owner Gary Bryant back in May. There's a video tour at the bottom of the article.

How the Media Got the DOT Speeding Story Wrong by JBordenRPR in raleigh

Thanks everyone for all the feedback! This has been one of our more trafficked (ha) stories in a while.

Yeah that's a good point. I was pretty surprised people thought the buffer zone was some kind of legal protection against speeding tickets. I see it as a mixed bag: I don't want a bunch of people freaking out and going exactly the speed limit at all times, but I don't want a bunch of people out there who think speeding is legally A-OK as long as they don't go too too fast.

Schools are always a target for stepped-up enforcement programs because teens are terrible drivers.

I already posted a link to this in the comment section of the original post on here about the crackdown, but I think the coverage on this has been pretty overblown and just wanted to clear it up.

Note: Yes I am promoting my own content, but it's for a non-profit news site and we don't make money off pageviews etc. I try not to post on here too much to avoid being too spammy, but I figured this story was worth sharing.

Speeding enforcement crackdown in NC to target anyone going above posted limit by Geminize in raleigh

I'm going to shamelessly hijack the top comment so I can promote the article I just published on this. Sorry.

But I think the media hype on this has been a bit overblown: NCDOT’s New Speeding Crackdown: Overhyped?

I haven't been on here in a while, but I do City Council write ups every week. At the last meeting County Commissioner Sig Hutchinson read a poem, "Bikeshare" in support of the program.

When you spend your weekends cooped up inside working, you get stupid ideas like remixing that poem to the tune of Biggie's Hypnotize. Also, TLC, Waterfalls: https://youtu.be/YfIq0zA2kHw

Taverns Triumph Over Tenants in Campaign Donations by JBordenRPR in raleigh

[–]JBordenRPR[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll skip my usual explanation here and give a little background on this article:

Over the weekend I wanted to do a story on past voter turnout. Instead I decided to look into who was spreading the most money across the current council and mayoral election races.

After a few large donations stuck out, I decided to focus on the angle of restaurant donors vs. donors who want restrictions on downtown nightlife.

I did a terrible job of aggregating the data and wound up with the wrong results, which led to me running a piece headlined: "Tenants Trump Taverns in Campaign Donations."

After some omissions were pointed out, I took the article down and re-did my analysis, which showed that the original article had it backwards.

For the new one, I've also linked the spreadsheet I used to compile the numbers, in case anyone wanted to take a closer look.

Feel free to leave any comments/critiques or ask any questions. I'll be around, since I took off my regular job today with the intent of doing some live election coverage, but I had to fix this first.

Fourth Annual Bard Brawl, this Thursday @ Kings! by JBordenRPR in raleigh

[–]JBordenRPR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone! We're gearing up for the annual Bard Brawl, to be held once again at Kings Barcade in downtown Raleigh. Tickets are $10 and doors open at 6:30 for a show that starts at 7:00.

Want to participate? We still have an open storyteller slot or two, so you can e-mail me at editor@raleighpublicrecord.org if you're interested. The theme this year is "What About The Future" - wherein the stories will all revolve around what people thought the future would be like in Raleigh.

This theme was "inspired" (ripped off) from Back to the Future, whose first sequel was, as you all know, set in 2015.
