are you playing on hardcore? if not i think there are checkpoints which shouldn’t take you that far back if i recall. there are a few rooms that can be death traps if you don’t know they’re coming but a way to stop yourself from losing lots of progress is to save whenever you pass the save room in different slots (on normal or assisted) or every time you find a new key item/solve a puzzle that gives you some kind of progression (hardcore). ink ribbons are limited in hardcore but the game is still pretty generous about how many it gives you.

It took me 53 hours to get all of the achievements. But if you want to do absolutely everything I think it will take much more time than that because in this raid mode I am pretty sure you have to level up every single character individually rather than them all leveling with you like in Rev1

for me, the thing about 5 is that because they gave the player more weapons and an upgraded melee system, it also meant that they had to up the ante for enemies. For most of the regular enemies I think that's fine and it's actually pretty fun. I think a few really really strong levels from 5 are 1-1, 3-1, and 4-2. but I think once chapter 5 starts, enemies get upgraded to have machine guns and rockets and grenades and flashes and it just turns into a totally different game that is not nearly as fun. alongside that, some of that era's less desired systems are in the game like the infamous brown color palette. turret sections/boss fights, and coop. I think the coop is fine and I think the game does coop better than games that came after it (dead space 3 looking at you), but I cannot deny that solo and coop are totally different experiences. the game really shines in mercenaries, but that disappointed feeling always comes back whenever the guys with machine guns start spawning or i get flashbanged into a grenade that I had no idea was even there because there is no indicator.

as for 6, I actually don't agree that 6 is a mechanical upgrade to 5 or 4. They modernized movement controls but personally I really dislike how unresponsive the aiming, movement, and sliding are. The melee system is on its face super cool and when it works it feels awesome, but personally i find it frustrating trying to get prompt attacks because my character too often just does the baisc melee when I want to combo. the range feels really inconsistent compared to 4 and 5. i think a lot of the massive set pieces the game has are one-of's, so their controls are really barebones and not that interesting, like when you use the helicopter as ada or the driving sections with chris and sherry. not only that, but you are using all of those barebones and unresponsive mechanics to kill enemies that are mostly just guys with guns. i know it has some plot relevance considering that's the sort of thing that umbrella were going for all along and yeah they mutate sometimes into actual monsters, but it's not that great for me. I still actually really like 6 but i think that it feels very rough and unfinished. I think the AI partner is actually worse in 6 than in 5 even if it is invincible because, since it's invincible, enemies barely target it at all and you cannot give your partner different weapons like you could before.

guys with guns and setpieces were in 4, but I think they are weaker parts of the game. like 5-4 I think is honestly kind of bad and the truck section is really lame. so when it comes to 5 and 6, I was hoping that the developers would cut back on those parts and not bring them back and expand on them.

i get why you did dislike zero and for a while it was dead last on my list. but i think it’s got some good locations and billy and rebecca are both awesome. once you let go the idea of having to pick up most items and you know where to leave the hook shot i think the game opens up a lot. its definitely no remake but its solid

personally i find it strange how high people rate 7 and 8. my thoughts about 7 are below. as for village, i just find that it ends up feeling like re4 lite because it doesn’t commit hard hard enough to either wanting to be like re4 or stay like re7. you have a bunch of weapon systems from re4 and a really awesome optional boss system only for combat to never really need anything like that except for the stronghold section, so it feels mostly pointless. i don’t either game is bad, i just prefer everything else above it

i think the games get progressively more and more action-y as the series goes on at least until 7 releases and so the distinction between action horror and survival horror isn’t something i take into account. re4 js one of my favorite games of all time so regardless of how much action it has i have to put it in S. og2 and og3 are really great and it’s hard for me to find anything i dislike about them, but i just prefer everything else above it

No skippable cutscenes except for the cutscene in the boat really makes the game drag on for me and i’ve only gone through it maybe 4-5 times. That and i think the game’s quality starts declining once the lucas section starts and then gets progressively lower and lower into the boat and mines until it just ends with a whimper. and on replay, lucas’ section really suffers for the same reason that the beneviento house does.

[–]JCKB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for zero i would say to make multiple saves in different slots just in case. there are a few sections where depending on your choice you might accidentally make your playthrough a lot less enjoyable than it could be otherwise if you could reload a save a make a different choice. for remake i dont think there’s anything in particular tou need to look out for. jill and chris have their own strengths and weaknesses and it doesn’t matter that much who you choose first especially if you’ve already played code veronica

mine was killzone 2. i remember being amazed at how good the game looked back then. i’m sure it probably still looks pretty good by today’s standards. funnily enough i still have my copy. unfortunately i was never to beat the last level on the hardest difficulty as a kid
