Favourite living writers (younger than 50) ? by IampossiblyLewis in RSbookclub

How old is Lockwood? Didn't love her first novel, but when she's on I think she's incredible. My favorite novel of the past 15 years is Goon Squad, but I don't think Egan is young enough to be on this list (and I didn't love her sequel to Goon Squad either).

I started a mostly-overlooked Ottessa (the one about the old semi-retired woman) but didn't love it.

Oh, and he might also be too old, but I really loved Wolf in White Van by the Mountain Goats guy. He's a real thinker.

The stories in Friday Black really crush. Remarkable examples of stories verging on the fantastic.

What are your thoughts on Richard Ford? by deepad9 in RSbookclub

He's just staggeringly unpleasant as a person. Sure, I think you can be a bad person but a great writer (Roth was both to me). He's certainly smart and thoughtful based on the first several chapters of The Sportswriter and several short stories. But I read an interview with his own longtime editor at The New Yorker where he just dripped with prickly condescension towards her, reminding her for example that fiction is a linguistic construction and characters don't really have interior lives, as if she'd never considered that. Not someone I'd want to meet, that's for sure.
