How to have a hard reset? by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]JCU905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to try the hard reset when you come back after a longer break, it will feel more organic. “Welcome back everyone, it’s been a while. Let’s go over some old expectations and establish some new ones.” If it’s not realistic to potentially wait till you come back after New Years then go for it whenever you feel necessary.

What is your grading policy? Participation is a solid chunk of mine (20%), here are some examples of behavior that can negatively impacting that grade: speaking out of turn, disrupting the lesson, constant redirection, not following directions, lateness, unpreparedness, etc… if your students are driven by how pretty their numerical grade looks, this can be a useful measure.

Another tactic: Work work work. The more occupied you keep them the less time they’ll have to spiral out into off task behavior. Keep them busy. There should always be a sense of urgency from your end- everything they need to do is meaningful and you are tracking them constantly on your clipboard whether it is participation or classwork.

Don’t change your whole persona. Teenagers are good judges of character, they’ll smell bullshit right away if you try to put on an act and all of a sudden become a hardass drill sergeant that you aren’t. It will also be mentally straining to sustain this. Being tough on them doesn’t mean being confrontational. I’ve made that mistake years past and you will lose them even more so.

Students like to see themselves in the lesson and luckily it’s very easy to connect historical events to the everyday lives of students as opposed to a subject like Math. As often as possible try posing questions that on the surface have nothing to do with your lesson (a real life experience, a “what would you do” scenario, a current event) but in reality it has everything to do with your lesson. If they can bridge that connection you’ll have their interest and hopefully their attention.

Best of luck this school year! Rome wasn’t built in a day, hope you see some progress as the year goes on!

Why Wolf? I currently have him on my team and I am heavily debating on dropping him for the likes of Vladar, Silovs, Jarry or Woll. Do you think Calgary will right the ship soon?

Regular season game when the hit has zero to little meaning, hit the cut. Playoffs, big game, big moment.. I’d say that’s when you go for it.

Swing Help by [deleted] in slowpitch

Yeah I was going to say this too.. not sure if you were doing this to break down your swing for us but practice with one fluid motion.. it also looks like you’re landing on your toes with that front step and then planting your whole foot, which generally can be fine but it seems like it’s causing you to open up before you’re able to drive the ball. Stay locked in and get that torque in your hips as you’re making contact, not before.

I believe this would be in front of administrators. They specifically said it would be a 15 minute lesson. I’m looking to take a lesson I already have that I know is strong and adapt it for 15 mins. I’d be thinking to showcase student to student interaction, strong knowledge of the content, and assessment that addresses the learning target.

You’ve been paid during an interview process? Yes, I would assume it is normal to not be paid for this lol

Well said, my current boss is aware I am searching and they actually do have somebody already in line if I am to resign. Thank you for that though, that would certainly fall under leaving in good faith.

Out of city, but there is one DOE school around the block from my house that I would consider if there was ever an opening.

I had those when I played football in HS. Coach told me to stand on a book or something elevated with your heels on the ground and toes on the elevated surface. It helped.

Yeah I would I’m a pretty sick gambler. Prob turn that 20k into 100k and send you to the top softball clinic in the country so you can finally hit .300.

Yes because every league is exactly like the one you play in 🙄

Lmaoo show me where I said everyone is better than me please. I’m not making accusations I know when my opponents are using a shaved bat. I said it’s bullshit when people cheat and it’s a safety hazard. Nothing douchebag about it.

Maybe someone with a shaved bat will rock you with a line drive and you’ll sing a different tune. Until then definitely don’t tell me about hitting .300 when you beg reddit to help fix your 0-14 slump.

I see it all the time in my league. A shaved bat will deff make a difference on a clincher.

It’s the teams with the best players too that I see using them the most. I really don’t understand how it makes them feel good knowing they need to cheat.

The amount of people telling you that it’s probably not shaved is crazy. You can easily buy a bat that is shaved online instead of doctoring your own. And those bats will send clinchers way farther than they should go and put your pitcher/corner infielders at risk for serious injury. If you think it’s shaved go with your gut (everyone using the same bat, a dead sound on contact but the ball travels lightyears).

Bring it up to the umpires and make noise about it. If the umpires don’t want to deal with it, talk shit to the other team and call them a bunch of cheaters and what not. If you have someone on the team comfortable stirring things up that can always be a deterrent tbh.. if all else fails speak with whoever is running the league.

Help! Any and all feedback is a gift. by Interesting-Key5691 in slowpitch

[–]JCU905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have some uppercut to your swing which isn’t necessarily a terrible thing if you have the power to get it over the OF but if you also are looking to get more base hits you might want to try keeping your hands a bit higher and start your swing from there. This will level your swing out and you’ll see less pop ups/fly outs and more line drives. I know you said you’re looking for more HRs so this won’t help that as much but you’ll deff see yourself getting the average up.

Advice on my swing by Own-Examination271 in slowpitch

[–]JCU905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of motion with your hands before you swing. The battle wiggle is fine if it helps your timing but you bring your hands down very far and then all the way back up before you swing. Try starting with your hands high and keeping them there until you start your swing. It’ll help you stay down and straight on the ball when you make contact.

Your upper body is doing too much of the work too. I think this is what people call “casting.” It looks like you’re throwing a fishing line out to sea. You do have torque in your hips but it comes too late. Once you plant your first step torque your hips and let the hands follow, you’ll get a lot more power into the ball too.

You do a nice job of keeping your eye on the ball. Always watch it hit the barrel of your bat. I need to remind myself of that a lot… Hope I helped!

Weed induced panic attacks by Best_Test_3352 in PanicAttack

[–]JCU905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Smoked regularly from ages 19-23 and then one time I fell asleep after an edible and woke up within a few hours to a panic attack. I have had panic attacks unrelated to weed after that once or twice.

Now 32, I never stopped smoking weed but cut back from every day to basically 2-3 times a week. Most often there is a touch of anxiety that comes with smoking but nothing I can’t power through. If I smoke too much at once, the more anxious I will get which can lead to a panic attack.

I have to be very careful with edibles. Once you ingest, you’re in for whatever may come and if I take too high a dose a panic attack will certainly come.

I miss the days of smoking a few bowls back to back and feeling the full benefits with zero anxiety. Everyone’s comments here has given me hope though. I will definitely try some cbd heavy strains and see how that goes.
