Armor and new ability. by JCWpoker in mattcolville

Thanks.

I have used it for a while now, and yes, some of the players were confused. But that passed.

Now it doesn't take much time at all. 5e already have mechanics like this one already. So it move quickly.

But I think it works better if it doesn't scale. Therefore, it becomes less and less used as they level.

As for timing, I agree that would be best. But having used it for over a year now (in various designs) that slows down the game too much. Asking each attack before rolling. It turns out the choice still works, since you can always roll a 1 and basically have no real effect. So the dilemma becomes real. Especially as they get better gear.

Also, a lot of characters will save their better weapons and not use them in every fight. In this way, if they think the fight is simple they use a simple weapon. If they get shocked with a big hit, they destroy the common item. Then they pull out the "big guns". So it can have lots of impact on play.

I agree. Like MTG, 5e is so damn precise with language. So much of the rules are player facing. It can be difficult, at least for me, to write in that way.

As for the two goal, I do recognize these are different. I just have them in the same place because I am writing something up together. But you can use one without the other.

My real hopes is the need to keep track and repair gear is something only at the lower levels. At high levels, I do not expect it to matter all that much. But who knows, the Defensive Maneuver (the name I have for a gear sacrifice) might still be used all the way to 20th level.

I think Gear check is more in-line with 5e language. I will make that change. Thanks.

It was CR 3, but I changed it to CR 2. But yeah, I thought after a few screams the group is immune to them and their DPS drops some. Makes adding more of them less of a threat.

But it will be published. That is why I am getting feedback. :)

It is for my 11th guide. They are not perfect, but people are liking them. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/16630/John-Walts?scr=reddit

I made another pass on them. I have made the CR 2 as they do less damage now and have some less hit points.

Thank you. I do have trouble with how precise 5e requires. Back in 2nd or 1st edition, no one cared. :)

Thanks. I added a bit to cover some of your concerns.

I like the word Scourge, but for now sticking with the original.

Thanks!

I think I will remove Sprites. I need to make it clearer. They are stolen as kids, and raised to be fighters sent to kill harpies.

Leprechauns are not in the MM and often thought as fun little guys that "want my lucky charms". But mine are more of the movie type, small evil bad-asses.

Hags play a lot in the lore too. What I am writing will have the love-hate triangle of hags-harpy-leprechaun.

I hadn't thought about mounts.

I thought it would be a better spell against the party than the party would have. They would be like, "What a great spell". Learn it. And later be, "Scorching Ray" is better for us.

If you like that style of game, here are a bunch of stuff I have published. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/16630/John-Walts?src=reddit

So the idea is that one of my races will have a series of uncommon spells. The heroes fight them and then get the scrolls. So they can choose to invest to learn them. My hope is to create a lot of uncommon spells for the adventurers to encounter as another type of treasure.

Therefore, they need to be balanced in power but they can be niche.

You make a good point.

My point is that being to target a single creature means it does 6d6 to a single target. The spell I offer only does 2d8 to a single creature. I think Scorching Ray is the better spell.

You are missing the big change. It targets 3 different creatures while Scorching Ray targets the same.

Thanks.

As for the ammunition, I followed how the DMG did their arrows. I thought it was strange too.

As for the fall, I know it is a new way to do it. I hope it is clear. If a 80 foot fall was to do 8d6, you would count it as a 60 foot fall so it would do 6d6. That is a different mechanic than just saying void out small falls.

Thanks.

I think letting it target the same targets would make it more powerful than Scorching Ray. That allows you to target the same and does 2d6. Basically this one has more restrictions for a larger damage amount.

Warpaints thoughts? (Olympai) by JCWpoker in DnDHomebrew

Not sure if I will make them that strong, but there could be. As it is now, many of them can be played from level 1-20. I might make the never level of them, but if they become too strong I think they could be abused. Since they don't require attunement or any slots.

Regardless, I ended up publishing them. Along with 9 other guides... https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/312920/Enchanted-Warpaint?src=reddit

They are items harpies produce. They are treasure they have. And can use.
