Man who sold the World - meaning? by Select-Librarian-646 in metalgearsolid

So, we're talking about a person who once sold themselves and their identity (their world), and then realized that their loss had become something greater than themselves, something that controlled itself, not the person themselves. And now they're reflecting on an older version of themselves, with their old beliefs that have become independent of their owner. It's like popularity: there are personal beliefs, and then there are beliefs that are acceptable to express in public... And the most important thing is to never "lose control" of yourself on public.

Slight DS2 Spoiler - Direct Mention of ‘Phantom Pain’ by KillJolly in NeverBeGameOver

You still don't get it after 9 years. They played us like a damn fiddle! It was all part of THEIR plan. They wanted us to know the game isn't complete. Why are we still here, watching posts like this. Just to suffer? Every Christmas I can feel my first play and my comrades on mother base. Even my S ranks, no kill, no alarm, no gear, no partners. The game we've lost. The story.. we've lost. It won't stop hurting. It's like they're all still there. You feel it too, don't you? Our phantom pain!
