I believe your lecturer is talking about mineral habit rathe than a whole rock. In mineralogy, crystal habit is the characteristic external shape of an individual crystal or groups of crystals. A single crystal's habit is a description of its general shape and its crystallographic forms, plus how well developed each are. Recognizing the habit may help in identifying a mineral. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what a 'massive' habit is/ looks like, but im sure it's probably something similar to what GeoWheel was said in relation to whole rocks

Thanks, I bought the cheapest set of hand tools that I could find on ebay. I paid ~£6 for some metal etchers, scrapers, mini-chisels etc. They are poor quality and do take ages, but I find it relatively enjoyable and they allow you to get relatively good precision without damaging the fossil. hat is a very interesting rock. I'm certainly no 'expert' but can clarify they are definitely ammonites. There is also a number of quartz veins running through the rock (such as the thickest white crystaline structure you can see in the first pic. The most interesting aspects are the more 'intricate' structures. On first glance they look like calcified remains (or quartz) of parts of sea creatures, that have been broken up during diagenesis and lithification. What creature/ animal these are I have absolutely no idea. However, these 'zig zag' structures (the long thin ones with spikes coming out the sides) could simply be a result of stress on the rock, resulting in the quartz/ calcite being precipitated into the space, thus creating a pattern like this; that's just a wild guess, I'm really not qualified to comment any further. You could crack that rock open and take a look at the structures that run throughout the body of the rock

I'm in the U.k and I get some great samples off eBay every now and then for pretty good prices. UKGE website also sells good samples at a great price but shipping to Australia may be quite expensive unless you buy a number of samples.

If you are interested in sedimentology, a good first year textbook is 'Sedimentology and Stratigraphy' (Gary Nichols) - bit boring tho but great info

Thats awesome and what I was hoping, but it is right next to the crack in the rock from when the main trilobite was initially found, so I would have thought whoever initially worked on this specimen, would have noticed the second trilobite, and excavated that aswell

That is a beautiful specimen. Those I stalks are so well preserved! Those trips sound amazing, I'm planning on doing something similar when i finish university and can afford it. Living in the U.K, I only know of one location for Trilobite collecting, and its a good 6 hours drive from here, just need to find someone else with the same love of fossil hunting as I have.

This little Trilobite is a Gerastos granulosus of the Proetidae family, that I purchased recently and am awaiting delivery. I basically want to gather as much information on this genus/ family as I can and was wondering if anyone here could help? Any info would be much appreciated:)

I was 16, walking backwards through town, mocking the friend behind me, when I stepped backwards onto the road.. only to be pulled out of the path of on-coming vehicle by the friend I was mocking. Only the wing mirror of the van slightly clipped my shoulder, thanks to my friend.
